I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Royal Dream Apartment on Gibson Drive West, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this four-star setup in the Springfield Complex. The building itself has that modern apartment-hotel vibe that’s become pretty popular in Johannesburg lately, and you know what? It actually works really well here.

The location is one of those pleasant surprises you discover when you’re not staying right in the city center. You’re still close enough to everything that matters – maybe a 15-minute drive to Sandton or the main business districts – but tucked away in this quieter residential area where you can actually hear yourself think. I mean, after dealing with the usual Joburg traffic noise, the relative peace around Gibson Drive was honestly refreshing. There’s decent parking too, which anyone who’s tried to park in central Johannesburg will appreciate. The apartment-style setup means you get proper space to spread out, not just another cramped hotel room where your suitcase becomes permanent furniture. The kitchen facilities are actually functional – I’m talking real appliances, not those tiny bar fridges that can barely hold a sandwich. Perfect if you want to grab groceries from one of the nearby shops instead of eating out every single meal.

What really sold me on this place was how it manages to feel like you’re staying somewhere residential while still getting hotel-level service. The 8.2 rating makes sense once you’ve been there a few days – it’s those little details that add up. The Wi-Fi actually works consistently (crucial if you’re trying to get work done), the water pressure is solid, and the beds are comfortable enough that you’re not counting down the nights until you can sleep properly again. The staff knows the area well too, which is invaluable when you’re trying to figure out the best routes around the city or where to find a decent restaurant that won’t break the bank. I actually ended up extending my stay by two nights because it just felt right – sometimes you find a place that hits that sweet spot between comfort and practicality. It’s not trying to be the fanciest spot in Johannesburg, but it delivers on what it promises without any of that oversold, under-delivered disappointment you sometimes get with places that talk a big game.

  Host Andre is really lovely, friendly and helpful! He gave us detailed instructions for our stay, how to enter our property and exit the gates. The one we stayed in is an upstairs unit. The guards are friendly at the gate and the complex is secure, feels safe when you're inside the compound.
  
  The accommodation has everything you need for a family stay. Washing machine, plenty of cutlery and crockery. Brooms and mops. Cleaning products. Laundry line for the balcony area but I think you can also use the communal one downstairs.
  
  There are 2 large double beds each in their own room with lots of wardrobe space. The beds are comfortable and everything was clean. All the rooms has a ceiling fan which we've been incredibly thankful for with this heatwave. The light bulbs in the room are able to conserve energy and come on during loadshedding.
  
  The wifi is reliable, tv has Netflix and other channels set up. Although we're not big on watching tv so can't comment more on this.
  
  The geyser stays hot during loadshedding (yes loadshedding affects this accommodation, however, we didn't mind it). The shower cubicle entrance can be a little tight to squeeze through if you're on the plump side. However, the shower itself was fine, the shower head spray pattern can be adjusted by turning the attachment. There's a bath tub which looks inviting but we didn't use it during our stay.
  
  There are 2 couches and a dining table in the lounge. Although I wouldn't recommend sleeping on the couch for too many nights as it's not quite long enough for an adult.
  
  People in the compound are lovely and friendly. Our kids made friends with the other kids and ended up playing together everyday after school. There is a grass area at the back of the complex with a jungle gym to kick a ball around and play. There is also a good sized (~10m length) swimming pool open during the day!
  
  What could be improved: I would recommend bringing a torch in case loadshedding occurs at night and you're a night owl.
  
  Otherwise we really enjoyed our stay.
