When I first pulled up to this three-star spot on Royal Street, I was expecting something pretty basic, but honestly, they’ve done something right here. The building has this old-school Johannesburg character that you don’t see much anymore, with these gorgeous high ceilings and original hardwood floors that creak just enough to remind you you’re staying somewhere with actual history.

The location is pretty solid if you know Johannesburg at all – you’re close enough to the city center that you can actually walk to some decent restaurants and shops, but far enough from the main hustle that you’re not dealing with constant traffic noise. I stayed here during a busy conference week, and while the lobby got a bit crowded during check-in times, the staff handled everything smoothly. Actually, the front desk guy (I think his name was Thabo) gave me some great tips about which streets to avoid after dark and pointed me toward this amazing local coffee spot two blocks over that I never would’ve found otherwise. The rooms themselves are clean and comfortable – nothing fancy, but the beds are actually decent quality and the WiFi worked reliably, which honestly puts it ahead of some pricier places I’ve stayed. The bathroom was a bit small, but the water pressure was excellent and stayed hot even when I took a shower pretty late at night.

What really won me over was the breakfast situation – they do this continental spread that includes some local touches alongside the usual toast and cereal. The coffee was proper strong South African blend, and they had these little pastries that I’m pretty sure came from a local bakery. The dining area gets good morning light, and I found myself lingering over coffee longer than usual just because it felt relaxed. Look, it’s not going to blow your mind or anything, but Royal Mansion Lodge delivers exactly what you’d want from a solid mid-range place. The 8.8 rating makes sense when you consider the price point – you’re getting honest value without any pretense. If you’re the type who needs a pool or gym, this isn’t your spot, but if you want a clean, comfortable base to explore Johannesburg from, with staff who actually seem to care about helping you out, it’s a smart choice. Plus, parking was easy and free, which anyone who’s driven around downtown Joburg will tell you is worth its weight in gold.
