I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Russell’s Rest Rooms on Colman Street, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like a pretty standard building in Protea Glen. But you know what? Sometimes the best places are the ones that surprise you, and this three-star spot really grew on me during my stay.

The thing about this part of Johannesburg is that it’s genuinely local – you’re not going to find tourist traps or overpriced coffee shops on every corner, which I actually loved. The staff here seem to really get that most guests are either business travelers or people who want a decent place to sleep without all the fuss. My room was clean and comfortable, nothing fancy but honestly better than some four-star places I’ve stayed at where they spend more on the lobby than the actual rooms. The bed was solid (I’m picky about mattresses), and the shower had proper water pressure – small things that matter when you’re tired.

What really stood out was how quiet it gets at night, which surprised me given that you’re still very much in the city. I mean, you’ll hear some street noise during the day, but by evening it’s pretty peaceful. The neighborhood has that lived-in feel where people actually go about their daily business rather than just passing through. There’s a decent local restaurant about two blocks down that the front desk guy recommended – nothing fancy, just good food at fair prices. Parking was straightforward too, which anyone who’s driven in Joburg will appreciate. I stayed during a quieter period in March, so I can’t speak to how busy it gets, but the 8.7 rating makes sense to me. It’s one of those places that does the basics really well without trying to be something it’s not, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Places near me in Johannesburg offer convenient access to major landmarks, where visitors can easily reach Apartheid Museum, Carlton Centre, and world-famous shopping districts in the bustling Sandton area.
