The name makes it sound like some cheesy tourist trap, but honestly, this place on Impala Avenue in Helderkruin is actually a gem. I mean, Roodepoort isn’t exactly where most visitors think to stay when they’re hitting Johannesburg, but that’s precisely why this four-star setup works so well – you get all the space and amenities without the crazy city center prices or chaos.

The apartment itself feels more like staying at a well-off friend’s house than a hotel. That 10-seater dining table isn’t just marketing fluff – it’s this gorgeous solid wood piece that actually seats ten people comfortably, which was perfect when my extended family visited last year. The three bedrooms are properly sized too, not those cramped spaces you sometimes get where you’re bumping into furniture. What I really appreciated was how the TV room gives everyone a place to spread out – kids can watch their shows while adults chat in the main living area. And honestly? The pool area is where this place really shines. It’s not Olympic-sized or anything, but it’s clean, well-maintained, and the garden around it has this nice mature feel with actual shade trees (trust me, you’ll want that during Joburg summers).

The Helderkruin location is actually pretty clever if you know the area. You’re far enough from the hustle to sleep peacefully – and I mean really peacefully, no traffic noise at night – but close enough to hop onto the R28 and reach Sandton or the airport without much hassle. There’s a decent shopping center about ten minutes away for groceries and basics, plus some surprisingly good local restaurants that most tourists never discover. Parking was never an issue, which anyone who’s dealt with Johannesburg city center will appreciate. The host was straightforward during check-in, gave us the rundown without being pushy, and was available when we had questions but didn’t hover. Only minor thing I’d mention – the Wi-Fi can get a bit spotty if everyone’s streaming at once, but honestly, that forced us to actually talk to each other around that big dining table, so maybe it was a blessing in disguise.

  What could be improved: I did not like that the staff would come and do the cleaning at 5 to 6 am while we still sleeping with our belongings left lying around in the sitting area. In most places the cleaners would wait till the guests are up and maybe have gone out before doing the cleaning
