Saffron Guest House Overview

Look, I’ll be honest – I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Saffron Guest House on 7th Street. Melville isn’t exactly the first neighborhood that comes to mind when people think of Johannesburg, but that’s actually what makes this place so refreshing. While everyone else is fighting for spots in Sandton or Rosebank, you’re tucked away in this artsy, slightly bohemian corner of the city that feels more like a proper neighborhood than a tourist zone. The guest house itself sits in this quiet residential stretch – you know, the kind where you can actually hear birds instead of constant traffic, which honestly surprised me given we’re still very much in the city.

What really got me about this four-star place was how the owners clearly put thought into the details without trying too hard. The rooms have this warm, lived-in feeling with proper South African touches – not the generic “African-themed” décor you see everywhere, but thoughtful pieces that actually belong there. I mean, the bed was comfortable enough that I didn’t wake up feeling like I’d been wrestling with it all night, and there’s something to be said for blackout curtains that actually work (trust me on this one). The breakfast situation is pretty solid too – nothing fancy, but they do a proper job with local ingredients, and the coffee is strong enough to get you moving, which matters when you’re planning to explore the city.

Here’s the thing though – Melville is having this moment right now. You’ve got 7th Street just down the road with its mix of restaurants and bars, plus you’re close enough to the Wits campus that there’s always something happening without it being completely overrun with tourists. Parking was surprisingly easy, which anyone who’s tried to navigate Joburg will appreciate, and the staff actually knows the area well enough to point you toward spots that aren’t in every guidebook. The whole experience felt more like staying at a friend’s well-appointed house than checking into a hotel – you get your privacy and proper amenities, but there’s this relaxed atmosphere where you don’t feel like you need to whisper in the hallways. It’s the kind of place where you end up staying an extra night just because you’re not ready to deal with airport chaos quite yet.

Reviews of Saffron Guest House

  • Warm and Cozy! – Linda from South Africa – August 4, 2025 (9/10)

Loved how friendly the staff was. The guesthouse was truly accommodating – I had to check in a bit earlier, and they were so helpful with this. The space is lovely, I adored how the art in the unit I was staying in was curated for the space.

  • A lovely little place – Natalie from South Africa – August 4, 2025 (9/10)

What an awesome little place. Lovely rooms in the hub of Melville. Perfect location. Managers are welcoming and kind.

What could be improved: Minor inconveniences. The one room was missing a kettle. The other was missing hand towels. Silly things. Overall, it is not enough to ruin the stay.

Good area and large beautiful facilities. Any problems experienced were attended to promptly 🙂

It's a beautiful house, it's very safe and in a quiet location. The breakfast venue is also not far from the house, and they serve nice food.

What could be improved: The parking. It's not comfortable parking on the other house but sleeping on the other house.
It was cold shame, the A/C didn't make a difference, maybe the host should invest in has heaters and more blankets.
