Saxon Hotel, Villas & Spa Overview
You know what hits you first when you pull up to Saxon Hotel, Villas & Spa? It’s not what you’d expect from a hotel right in the heart of Sandton’s business district. I mean, you’re literally minutes from all those glass towers and shopping centers, but this place feels like you’ve stumbled into some private estate that got lost on its way to the Cape Winelands.
The whole property sits on these gorgeous gardens that honestly make you forget you’re in Johannesburg at all. I’ve stayed at plenty of five-star places, but Saxon has this thing where they’ve managed to make luxury feel… well, not stuffy. The rooms – and when I say rooms, some of these are basically full apartments – have this contemporary African thing going on that actually works instead of feeling forced. Heavy wooden furniture, but not dark and oppressive, you know? And the bathrooms are ridiculous in the best way. I’m talking rainfall showers that could probably fit three people, though I can’t imagine why you’d need that.
What really gets me is how they’ve nailed the service without making it weird. The staff knows your name by day two, but they’re not hovering around making you feel like you can’t move without supervision. The spa is where things get interesting though – they do this whole African-inspired treatment menu that isn’t just marketing nonsense. I tried their Marula oil massage after a particularly brutal day of meetings, and honestly, I think I melted into the table. The restaurant situation is solid too, though if you’re feeling adventurous, you’re close enough to Sandton City that you can walk over for dinner options. Just be smart about it after dark – this is still Joburg, after all. Parking is handled by valet, which is clutch because finding a spot around Saxon Road can be a nightmare during business hours. The pool area gets pretty busy during conference season (basically most of the year), but early mornings are perfect if you want to actually swim instead of just posing with a cocktail. One small thing – the WiFi can get sketchy in some of the garden villas, probably because they’re tucked away from the main building, but the main hotel has rock-solid internet if you’re here for work. With a 9.6 rating, you’d expect perfection, and while Saxon comes close, it’s the little human touches that make it memorable rather than just impressive.
Best attractions in Johannesburg range from the historic Gold Reef City theme park to the trendy Maboneng Precinct and elegant venues overlooking the sprawling cityscape and Constitution Hill.

Perfection! – David from United Kingdom – August 14, 2025 (10/10)
Loved everything about stay, wonderful stay, room, great staff – it was perfect.
What could be improved: NothingOur best stay ever in a South African hotel by far. Short but nothing short of perfection. – Paranthaman from South Africa – July 28, 2025 (9/10)
Fabulous facilitation by all staff to assist us as we flew in from Cape Town on an early flight arriving at 10 and rushing off to a function starting at 11. They ushered us in and gave us our room with an early check in to change and make it on time to our function! That’s the best hospitality we ever experienced. Then they graced us with a late check out as we went out to visit Decorex in Sandton before leaving for home. The butler service is amazing and instantaneous. It was truly home from home as we used to live in Hyde Park near the Saxon.
What could be improved: Breakfast was fabulous. Coffee lounge near the pool gorgeous as usual as we have come here time after time over the years and held family functions with absolute perfection. Highly recommended.A truly luxurious and flawless stay — everything was beautiful, thoughtful, and absolutely amazing. – Suzan from South Africa – July 7, 2025 (9/10)
My stay at the Saxon Hotel was nothing short of outstanding. It was luxurious, comfortable, and filled with thoughtful touches throughout. The food was amazing, the breakfast absolutely top-notch, and the hostess made the experience even more special. Every detail was perfectly executed — truly a five-star experience!

A wonderful, relaxing experience in a fantastic villa enhanced by exceptional service and amenities. – David from Australia – March 24, 2025 (9/10)
The breakfast was excellent and dinner at The Terrace was also great. Great service. The villa was fantastic and the butler service was exceptional.
What could be improved: The only negative was dinner at Qunu, which was a disappointment for the price. A limited menu and the main meal I had was not a five star experience. My favourite place to stay in Johannesburg. i'm a repeat visitor. – Gwebu from United Kingdom – March 4, 2025 (10/10)
