I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Scenic 2-Bedroom Apartment – Upper Houghton – Fast Wi-Fi & Washer on Eckstein Street, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. Upper Houghton isn’t exactly where most tourists end up, but that’s actually what makes this place pretty special. You’re in one of Johannesburg’s leafier suburbs, away from the hustle but still close enough that you can get to Sandton or Rosebank without too much drama. The building itself sits on a quiet residential street – I mean, you’ll hear the occasional car, but it’s nothing like staying downtown where there’s constant noise.

What really surprised me about this three-star setup is how much space you actually get. Two proper bedrooms means you’re not cramming everyone into one room like most city apartments, and honestly, the washer was a game-changer – I know that sounds boring, but when you’re staying somewhere for more than a couple nights, being able to do laundry without hunting down a laundromat is huge. The Wi-Fi lives up to its billing too, which matters if you’re trying to work remotely or just want to stream something without buffering every five minutes. I tested it from both bedrooms and the living area, and it held up fine.

The location grows on you once you figure out the neighborhood rhythm. There’s a decent coffee spot about a ten-minute walk away, and you’re actually closer to some of Joburg’s better residential areas than you’d be staying in the tourist zones. Parking isn’t a nightmare here either – something you definitely can’t take for granted in this city. The building feels secure without being fortress-like, which strikes a good balance. Look, it’s not going to blow you away with fancy amenities or Instagram-worthy views, but sometimes what you want is a clean, functional place where you can spread out and actually live for a bit. The 7.8 rating feels about right – it does what it promises without any major surprises, good or bad. If you’re the type who needs to be walking distance from everything touristy, this probably isn’t your spot, but if you want to experience Johannesburg more like someone who actually lives here rather than just passing through, Upper Houghton gives you that authentic residential feel while still keeping you connected to the rest of the city.

  This place is so peaceful, the neighborhood is clean and quiet, going for a walk around here was a treat. When we came back later and it was cold, there was a heater available for us and plenty blankets – props to our host! The apartment is spacious, and comfortable, beautifully decorated and has all the necessary amenities will definitely be booking here again soon 🙂
