You know what caught me off guard about Serene Guest Manor? The name actually fits – and that’s rare these days. I mean, when you pull up to this three-star spot on Flamingo Avenue, there’s this immediate sense of calm that hits you, which is honestly pretty impressive considering you’re still very much in Johannesburg.

The thing is, this isn’t your typical Jo’burg accommodation. It sits in this quiet pocket of the northern suburbs where the jacaranda trees actually have room to spread out, and you can hear birds in the morning instead of just traffic. The owners (a lovely couple who’ve been running the place for years) have this knack for making the space feel more like a friend’s really nice guest house than a commercial hotel. The rooms have that lived-in comfort – proper wooden furniture, not the generic stuff you usually get, and beds that are actually firm enough to sleep well on. I particularly loved how each room has these big windows that let in loads of natural light, plus little touches like locally-made soaps and fresh flowers that someone clearly refreshed regularly.

What really sold me on this place though was how genuine everything felt. The breakfast isn’t some elaborate buffet setup, but it’s proper – fresh fruit, decent coffee (thank goodness), and eggs cooked how you want them. The common areas have books you’d actually want to read, and there’s this lovely garden where you can sit with a drink in the evenings. Parking‘s easy and secure, which matters more than you’d think in this city. The location works brilliantly too – you’re about fifteen minutes from Sandton if you need the business district, but close enough to some great local restaurants that tourists never find. There’s this Ethiopian place just down the road that the hosts recommended, and honestly, it was one of the best meals I had during my entire stay in South Africa. The only minor thing I’d mention is that the WiFi can be a bit patchy in some rooms (though it works fine in the main areas), and if you’re not used to South African plugs, make sure you’ve got the right adapter – they don’t have extras lying around like bigger hotels do. But for the price point and the genuine hospitality, Serene Guest Manor delivers exactly what it promises, which is more than you can say for a lot of places these days.

  The houses stay inside compound so it is safe. Very close to Montecasino and Fournos Bakery shop, Fourways mall. It takes half an hour to go to Lesedi culture village, Lion park and less than an hour to Rosebank roof top market, Nelson Mandela square.
  There are several houses in this manor. Receptionist is a nice lady. House where we stay were comfortable. There are air conditioners with hot and cold air. They do cleaning house everyday. Recommend this place to travelers

  What could be improved: We were very happy with our stay, I think it would be great to have iron and hairdryers in the rooms, after an amazing swim in the lovely swimming pool the ladies hair was wet, if we knew we would have organized our own. More braai stands, around the facility if the place is booked out this might be a challenge, and more dustbins outside…

  Tha place is nice and quite,the staff is friendly and helpful,the beds are comfortable ND I liked that they have netflix. If it's cold they offer you heaters and electric blankets I was so impressed so definitely will go back again
