Shepherd’s Corner Guest House Overview
I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Shepherd’s Corner Guest House on Shepherd Avenue, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this tucked-away spot in Bryanston. But you know what? Sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t shout about themselves from the main road. This four-star gem sits in one of those quiet residential pockets where you actually feel like you’re staying somewhere locals would recommend, not just another cookie-cutter hotel.
The thing about Bryanston is that it’s got this perfect middle-ground vibe – you’re close enough to Sandton’s business district that you won’t spend half your day in traffic (trust me, that matters in Johannesburg), but far enough away that you can actually sleep at night without hearing construction or late-night revelers. The guest house itself has that warm, lived-in feeling that larger hotels just can’t pull off. I mean, the staff actually remembered my name by the second day, and the owner clearly put thought into the details – like having proper reading lights by the beds and those little touches that show someone who travels actually designed the rooms.
What really sold me on this place was the breakfast situation. They serve it in this sunny dining area that overlooks their garden, and honestly, it’s one of those mornings where you linger over coffee because everything feels unhurried. The food is proper South African fare done well – none of that sad continental breakfast nonsense. Plus, parking is right there and secure, which anyone who’s driven around Joburg knows is worth its weight in gold. The Wi-Fi actually works throughout the property (tested it by the pool area), and the rooms stay surprisingly quiet even though you’re not far from the main roads. Sure, it’s not the flashiest place you’ll ever stay, but there’s something refreshing about a spot that focuses on getting the fundamentals right rather than impressing you with marble lobbies you’ll walk through once.

Reviews of Shepherd’s Corner Guest House
I believe the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, looked a little like the Paradise I got to experience – Nkululeko from South Africa – April 14, 2024 (10/10)
Ahh man who knew you could find a jungle (without the creepy crawlies) in the city. What a beautiful, lush, vibrant yet refreshing space to be in. The view of the trees and architecture from the room are a gift that I will never forget. The way the green and brown of the building mix is something out of a fairytale. The host is the most gorgeous, gracious and sweetest soul to ever exist! It was a pleasure to be welcomed into her amazing space!
What could be improved: My length of stay didn't allow me to explore the garden and pool.Highly recommended stay away home – Carina from South Africa – March 21, 2024 (10/10)
Beautiful guesthouse and gardens. The host and her staff went out of their way to accommodate my requests for early breakfasts. The complementary milk in the fridge for early morning coffee, after arriving late the night before, was extremely thoughtful of the host and much appreciated.

Impeccable detail to comfort – throws for the couch, rusks, tea, coffee + your fridge is stocked with milk, butter, preserves and bread. It felt like home. The dogs are wonderful. The location is excellent – one of the nicest suburbs in Johannesburg, I felt safe and was close to everything I needed.
I much prefer this to any hotel stay.Going the extra mile – Karen from South Africa – August 17, 2023 (10/10)
You are really made welcome by the owners and the staff. Siona remembered from our last trip that I eat gluten free bread and we arrived this time to find some in the fridge.
We also needed to check-in early, and this was not a problem.Wonderful – Karen from South Africa – July 10, 2023 (9/10)

What could be improved: All goodExceptional – Chidassicua from Mozambique – May 15, 2023 (10/10)
Christie is a very sympathetic and caring person. The place is clean and cozy. The internet is very fast. For those who want a quiet place to work or relaxing I recommend
Stunning and relaxing. Will definitely come back again. – Simangaliso from South Africa – May 11, 2023 (9/10)
The place is just kept as natural as possible. The garden is very welcoming and so relaxing.
The apartment we chose is very comfortable: large kitchen with all the necessities for self-catering, large bathroom with a huge bath, shower and his and hers basins, large sitting area with a beautiful view to the garden, and a huge bedroom with a huge bed with white linen.
What could be improved: We kept all our windows and the sliding doors opened and realized that there were other tenants in the other rooms and would wander in the garden and would look through the windows and made us that we were in a public place. So, privacy was a bit compromised.
