I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Sitatunga Guest Lodge on Kudu Crescent, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like just another guesthouse in Rivonia. But you know what? Sometimes the best places are the ones that surprise you without trying too hard.

The thing about this four-star spot is that it actually feels like someone’s elegant home rather than a sterile hotel. The owners clearly put thought into every detail – I mean, the common areas have this warm, lived-in quality with beautiful African art that doesn’t feel like it was bought in bulk from some decorator’s catalog. My room was spacious (honestly bigger than I expected) and had this lovely private patio where I could actually hear birds in the morning instead of traffic noise. The beds are seriously comfortable too – I’m talking about that perfect firmness that lets you sleep deeply without waking up with a sore back.

What really sold me on this place though is how well-positioned it is for exploring Johannesburg. Rivonia might sound suburban and boring, but it’s actually brilliant if you want to avoid the chaos of the city center while still being close to everything that matters. Sandton’s business district is maybe ten minutes away, which was perfect for my meetings, and you’re close enough to all the good restaurants in the area without dealing with the insane traffic you get closer to town. The staff here really knows their stuff too – they gave me directions to places I never would’ve found on my own and were genuinely helpful rather than just polite. Parking was never an issue (trust me, this matters in Joburg), and the whole property feels secure without being fortress-like. I stayed during a busy conference week and while the lodge was full, it never felt crowded or noisy – there’s something about the layout that keeps things peaceful. The breakfast spread was actually impressive for a smaller place like this, with proper coffee and fresh fruit that didn’t look like it had been sitting out since yesterday. Look, it’s not going to blow your mind with flashy amenities, but sometimes you just want a place that does everything well without any drama. That’s exactly what Sitatunga delivers.

• Private little Guest House in Johannesburg – Emmanuelle from Canada – September 3, 2025 (9/10)

  The Rhino Room was so comfortable and the breakfast was delicious (buffet + choice of eggs). The staff was very kind, they let me stay the whole day before my evening flight even though I should have checked-out in the morning. They offer a shuttle service from and to the airport (but it is more expensive than an Uber).

  The place was very neat and clean 👌 with a beautiful garden and swimming pool. The garden was outstanding. We really enjoyed the atmosphere of clean, fresh air.
