I’ll be honest – when I first walked into Southern Sun Katherine Street, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like just another business hotel. But you know what? This place actually surprised me in all the right ways. Located right in the heart of Johannesburg’s financial district, it’s one of those four-star properties that gets the fundamentals so right that you forget to complain about the small stuff.

The thing about staying in Sandton is that you’re basically in South Africa’s version of Manhattan – all glass towers and bustling energy during the week, then oddly quiet on weekends. Southern Sun Katherine Street sits perfectly in this chaos, and honestly, the soundproofing is better than I expected. I mean, you can hear some street noise if you really listen, but nothing that’ll keep you up at night. The rooms are what I’d call “smart comfortable” – not trying to be boutique-fancy, but everything works properly and the beds are actually decent (I’m picky about mattresses, so that matters). The Wi-Fi doesn’t drop out every five minutes like some places, which is crucial if you’re here on business.

What really won me over was the staff’s genuine helpfulness – not that rehearsed hotel smile stuff, but actual useful advice about getting around. The concierge told me which streets to avoid after dark and recommended a fantastic Ethiopian place just a few blocks away that I never would’ve found otherwise. The location is pretty strategic too; you’re walking distance to Nelson Mandela Square if you want to do some shopping or grab dinner, and the Gautrain station is close enough that getting to OR Tambo airport doesn’t involve a stressful hour-long taxi ride through traffic. Plus, there’s secure parking right there, which anyone who’s driven in Joburg will tell you is worth its weight in gold. The breakfast spread is solid – nothing revolutionary, but they do a proper South African breakfast with boerewors and decent coffee, and there’s always fresh fruit that actually tastes like something. I stayed here during a particularly busy conference week, and even with the hotel fully booked, service never felt rushed or impersonal.

  Booked Family room which was very convenient with kids that require supervision. Kitchenette was good. Great breakfast and since was busy, opted for takeaway breakfast which was good.

  The rooms were spacious, spotless, and beautifully comfortable. Temogo, the potter, was truly amazing, and Nokuthula at reception welcomed us with such friendliness and professionalism. The breakfast was absolutely delicious, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We’re already looking forward to our next visit and can’t wait to bring the kids along next time
