You know what struck me first about Southern Sun Sandton? The lobby actually feels alive – there’s this constant buzz of business travelers mixing with tourists, and honestly, it works better than you’d expect for a four-star place. I mean, Sandton can feel pretty corporate and sterile sometimes, but this hotel manages to have some personality despite being right in the thick of all those gleaming office towers.

The location on Rivonia Road is honestly perfect if you need to be anywhere in Sandton – you’re walking distance from Nelson Mandela Square (which, let’s be real, is basically tourist central but the restaurants are actually decent), and the Gautrain station is close enough that you won’t need to deal with Johannesburg traffic if you’re smart about it. I stayed here during a conference week, and the staff seemed genuinely used to handling the chaos of business travelers who need things done yesterday. Check-in was surprisingly smooth even with a line, and they actually remembered my name the next morning – small thing, but it matters when you’re tired and far from home.

The rooms are what I’d call “reliably comfortable” – nothing that’ll blow you away, but everything works and the beds are properly firm. I had a room facing the city side, and while you get some traffic noise from Rivonia Road in the mornings, it’s not the kind that keeps you awake. The air conditioning actually works (not always a given in South African hotels, trust me), and there are enough power outlets that you won’t be crawling around unplugging the mini-fridge to charge your laptop. What I really appreciated was the shower pressure – after a long day dealing with Johannesburg’s intensity, that hot water hits different. The Wi-Fi held up even during peak business hours, which honestly surprised me given how many people were probably streaming and video calling simultaneously. If you’re planning to eat at the hotel, the restaurant is solid but not spectacular – though their breakfast buffet during weekdays is pretty comprehensive, clearly designed for people who need to fuel up before diving into Sandton’s business district. The pool area is smaller than the photos suggest, but it’s clean and gets decent sun in the afternoons if you need to decompress.

  The location of the Hotel is great (within Sandton and a Shuttle, every 30 minutes, to take you on the Sandton City Mall).
  The Staff were professional and extremely helpful.
  Inhouse breakfast was great with an array of food and drinks on offer.
  
  The hotel honored our request for a birthday surprise with birthday "cake" and bottle of champagne. Eternally grateful.

  Beautiful, conveniently placed property with friendly and supportive staff. Breakfast was delicious.

  I always book this hotel in Sandton because of the Shuttle service.
  Comfortable room, excellent work facilities – desk, work lamp and plug points
  Restaurant staff were attentive and quick during breakfast service
  The Executive chef checked on meals during dinner service on Tuesday night and approved a sauce made by another chef. That impressed me!
  I had the Buffet, it was excellent and great value for money.
