When I first pulled up to Spacious Garden Cottage on 8th Street in Parkmore, I’ll be honest – I wasn’t sure what to expect from this three-star spot tucked away in Sandton. But you know what? Sometimes the places that don’t immediately wow you from the street end up being exactly what you need.

The cottage sits in this quiet residential pocket where you can actually hear birds in the morning instead of traffic, which is honestly a small miracle when you’re this close to Sandton’s business district. I mean, you’re literally minutes from Nelson Mandela Square and all those glass towers, but it feels like you’ve escaped to someone’s actual neighborhood. The garden they mention in the name isn’t just marketing speak either – there’s genuine green space here, nothing fancy, but real plants and trees that make the whole place feel less hotel-y. Parking was straightforward too, which anyone who’s driven around Sandton during business hours will appreciate.

What really struck me about this place is how it manages to feel homey without trying too hard. The rooms are spacious (they got that part of the name right), and while the décor isn’t going to win any design awards, everything works and feels clean and comfortable. The kind of place where you can spread out your laptop and papers without feeling cramped, or actually unpack your suitcase instead of living out of it. Check-in was refreshingly simple – no lengthy presentations about amenities you’ll never use. The staff seem to know the area well, which came in handy when I needed directions to some of the smaller streets in the surrounding neighborhoods. And honestly, for a three-star rating, you get solid value here. It’s not luxury, but it’s not pretending to be either. The location works especially well if you’re doing business in the area but want to avoid the premium you’d pay to stay right in the heart of Sandton Central. You’ll sleep better here too – those big hotels near the convention centers can get pretty hectic with all the corporate events and conferences going on.

  What could be improved: the bed was a bit uncomfortable and noisy, It was just my toddler and I sleeping on the bed but I could hear the noise when my toddler switches to sleep on the other side.

  The owner is very friendly and will attend to your requests as best he can if you reach out to him. The place is also quite spacious and great value for money considering the area.
  
  What could be improved: The only issue is that the infrastructure is really old. The kitchen tap is broken, the TV is really old and not the flat screen advertised, the couches aren't comfortable and the shower head and door is not the greatest experience..

  What could be improved: It is hard to reach the property via navigation as all the entrances to the streets are gated. Only 2 entrances are usable 24/7. The host only told us this after we got there. It should have been in the check-in instructions.
  Only 2 toilet rolls for a week stay, no soap, hand soap, shower gel. There was no cleaning for the whole week. No bin bags, no towel change.
  The bed is not for light sleepers as it squeaks with any little movement.
  There was a water outage for the last day of our trip. We couldn't do anything, and the host did not communicate with us. We had to call around 12 to find out what was going on. He offered to bring us a bucket of water to flush the toilet. We left after 3 to start our day after buying our own water to wash and drink and prepare something to eat. The bucket of water was at the door when we came back in the evening, but the water supply had already been restored.
  Could not get hold of the host for early morning check out (7am). There was no answer at the main house to hand over the key. The host only replied 2 hours later.

  The location was good as it enabled me to get to various areas in Sandton easily and the host was hospitable.
  
  What could be improved: Load shedding was a big problem as the facility had no backup power generator so missed some World Cup matches also had a security scare the second night as some security people stormed the Guest House purportedly in search of hooligans who they said they were informed sneeked into the Facility.

  What could be improved: Extremely limited kitchen utensils for a self catering property. No back up power supply in a time of load shedding – not even a torch until requested. Lights in kitchen and bedroom not working, reported but not replaced during my one week stay. One afternoon and night the adjacent chalet (other half of the same house) with which the garden is shared, hosted an extremely loud teenage party – not much sleep that night!
