I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Splice Apartments on Main Ave, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The building has this modern, almost industrial look that somehow works perfectly in this part of Johannesburg. You know what struck me right away? How quiet it was, even though you’re literally in the middle of everything. I mean, you’re close enough to walk to the trendy spots in Maboneng, but far enough from the main tourist chaos that you actually get some peace.

The apartment I stayed in was genuinely spacious – and I’m not just saying that because I’ve gotten used to cramped hotel rooms. We’re talking a proper kitchen where you can actually cook (the local Woolworths is just a few blocks away, perfect for groceries), a living area where you don’t feel like you’re sitting on the bed, and honestly, some of the most comfortable furniture I’ve encountered in a four-star place. The Wi-Fi was solid too, which matters if you’re trying to work remotely or just want to video call home without that annoying lag. What really impressed me was the attention to detail – proper blackout curtains (trust me, you’ll appreciate this), decent water pressure in the shower, and they’ve got that perfect temperature control that actually works.

The staff here really knows their stuff about the area. When I asked about getting to Constitution Hill, they didn’t just point me toward an expensive taxi – they explained the walking route and mentioned which streets to stick to. That kind of local insight makes a difference. Parking was straightforward too, which honestly surprised me given how tricky it can be in this part of the city. The whole building feels secure without being fortress-like, if that makes sense. You’ll notice they’ve got good lighting in all the common areas and the elevators actually work reliably – small things that matter when you’re hauling luggage around. I stayed here during what locals call the busy season, and even then it never felt crowded or rushed. The location really is something special though – you can walk to some fantastic restaurants (seriously, try the place two streets over that the front desk recommended), and you’re close enough to the business district that you don’t need to plan your whole day around getting there. It’s one of those places where you feel like you’re staying somewhere locals would actually choose, not just another tourist trap.

To explore Johannesburg during the mild winter months from June to August, tourists need early preparation as this dynamic metropolis draws visitors eager to discover its rich mining heritage and renowned art galleries.

  What could be improved: The maid was still cleaning the apartment past our check in time. Plus the flat had a bad odor due to the mop that was used to clean the floors. I suggest getting a new mop and better floor detergents.

  We enjoyed our stay at Splice. Gulnar and Iqbal were fantastic hosts. They were kind and helpful throughout our stay and always responded quickly to any questions or requests. The apartment is spacious and comfortable, with a nice big lounge area to relax in and kitchen to prepare food. The balcony also has a decent view of the surrounding area and it was nice to open it up and take in the morning air every day.
  
  The building also has a decent, well-equipped gym on the top floor which I found very useful and convenient. I was delighted to be able to get a few much-needed workouts in while traveling.
