I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to St Andrews Hotel and Spa on Milner Avenue, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like another business district hotel. But you know what? This place completely surprised me, and I mean that in the best way possible.

The thing about this four-star property is that it sits in this interesting spot where Johannesburg’s corporate world meets residential neighborhoods, which actually works really well if you’re not looking to be right in the thick of everything downtown. The staff at check-in were genuinely welcoming – not that practiced hotel smile you usually get, but people who seemed to actually care about making sure I was sorted. My room had this unexpected view over some tree-lined streets that made me forget I was in one of Africa’s biggest cities for a minute. The beds are properly comfortable too, with those thick duvets that make you want to sleep in way past checkout time.

What really won me over though was the spa situation – and I’m usually pretty skeptical about hotel spas because they’re often just fancy-looking treatment rooms with average service. This one’s different. The therapists know what they’re doing, and honestly, after a long day dealing with Joburg traffic (which, let me tell you, is no joke), those massage tables became my best friend. The facilities are clean and well-maintained, not like some places where you can tell the spa was an afterthought. I also appreciated that the restaurant doesn’t try to be something it’s not – decent food, reasonable portions, and they actually understand when you just want something simple after a day of meetings or sightseeing. The breakfast spread is solid too, with proper South African options mixed in with the usual continental stuff.

Location-wise, you’re about a fifteen-minute drive from the main business areas, which meant I could escape the chaos when I wanted to but still get where I needed to go without too much hassle. Parking was never an issue, which anyone who’s tried to find a spot in central Joburg will appreciate. The neighborhood feels safe for evening walks, and there are a few local spots nearby if you want to venture out for dinner. I’d definitely stay here again – it’s one of those places that gets the balance right between being professional and actually comfortable.
