You know what caught me off guard about Stay Ulo at Atholl Gate? Walking in, I honestly wasn’t expecting much from a three-star place in Sandton – I mean, the area can be pretty hit or miss – but this little spot actually has some serious charm tucked away on Wierda Road East.

The thing is, Johannesburg’s Sandton district gets crazy busy during business hours, but Stay Ulo sits just far enough from the main Sandton City chaos that you’re not dealing with constant traffic noise. I stayed there during a February trip (which, if you’ve been to Jo’burg in summer, you know how intense those afternoon thunderstorms can get), and honestly, watching the lightning from their communal areas was pretty spectacular. The staff – and this is something I actually remember – were genuinely helpful about navigation, which matters when you’re trying to figure out Sandton’s somewhat confusing street layout. They knew exactly which Uber pickup spots work best and warned me about the construction on Rivonia Road that was backing up traffic.

What I really appreciated was how they’ve managed to create this sort of boutique-y feel without the pretentious pricing. The rooms aren’t huge, but they’re thoughtfully designed with decent storage (something a lot of places skip) and the Wi-Fi actually works consistently – crucial when you’re trying to get work done or stream something after a long day. The common areas have this relaxed vibe where you’ll find a mix of business travelers and tourists, and people actually chat instead of just staring at their phones. There’s a nice outdoor space where you can grab some air, which is perfect during those mild Highveld evenings. I’ll be honest, the breakfast isn’t going to blow your mind, but it’s solid and they accommodate dietary restrictions without making a big fuss about it. Plus, you’re walking distance from some really good restaurants – that little Ethiopian place around the corner is absolutely worth trying, and the locals who work nearby actually eat there, which is always a good sign.
