I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to StayEasy Eastgate on South Boulevard Road, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like your typical three-star business hotel. But you know what? Sometimes the unassuming places surprise you the most, and this spot in Johannesburg actually turned out to be one of those pleasant discoveries that makes you rethink your hotel snobbery.

The thing about this area is that it’s properly connected to everything without being in the thick of the tourist chaos – I mean, you’re close enough to OR Tambo that you won’t stress about early flights, but far enough from the city center madness that you can actually get some sleep. The staff at check-in were genuinely helpful (not that rehearsed hotel smile stuff), and honestly, the rooms are way cleaner and more comfortable than the price point suggests. Sure, it’s not going to win any design awards, but the beds are solid, the shower pressure is decent, and there’s actually reliable WiFi throughout – which, let’s face it, is half the battle in any hotel these days. I noticed they’ve clearly put effort into maintaining the place; the carpets aren’t worn thin, the paint looks fresh, and those little touches like having enough outlets near the bed show they understand what travelers actually need.

What really won me over was how the place just works without any fuss. The restaurant serves proper South African breakfast – none of that continental nonsense with sad pastries – and the parking situation is sorted, which anyone who’s driven around Joburg will appreciate. The area gets busy during weekday mornings with business travelers, but evenings are surprisingly quiet. I actually ended up staying an extra night because it felt like such good value, and the location made it easy to explore the East Rand without dealing with inner city traffic. Look, it’s not going to be your Instagram moment hotel, but if you want a reliable, well-run place where you’ll sleep well and the staff remember your name by day two, StayEasy Eastgate hits that sweet spot perfectly.
