Summerview Boutique Hotel & Conference Overview
I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Summerview Boutique Hotel & Conference on Gaunt Avenue in Bryanston, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The name had me thinking it might be one of those business-heavy places where you hear conference calls echoing through the lobby, but actually, it’s got this surprisingly intimate feel that caught me off guard in the best way.
What really struck me about this four-star spot is how they’ve managed to balance that boutique vibe with proper business facilities. You know how sometimes hotels try to be everything to everyone and end up being nothing special? Well, this place actually pulls it off. The rooms have character – not that cookie-cutter chain hotel look – and honestly, the bed situation is solid. I’m pretty picky about mattresses, and theirs passed the test. The conference side of things is tucked away enough that you’re not constantly bumping into people in suits (though if you are one of those people in suits, the meeting rooms are genuinely well-equipped).
Bryanston itself is one of those Johannesburg neighborhoods that locals love but tourists sometimes miss – it’s got this leafy, almost suburban feel even though you’re still properly in the city. From the hotel, you’re actually in a sweet spot where you can walk to some decent restaurants and cafes, which is rarer than you’d think in Joburg. The parking situation is straightforward, which anyone who’s driven around South African cities will appreciate. I mean, there’s nothing worse than circling blocks looking for a spot after a long day. The staff here genuinely seem to know the area well too – they steered me toward this little Portuguese place about ten minutes away that I never would have found otherwise. The only thing I’d mention is that weekend mornings can get a bit bustling with conference events, but if you’re not an early riser anyway, it won’t bother you. Overall, it’s one of those places that gets the fundamentals right without trying too hard to impress you with flashy nonsense.
Johannesburg travel planning should be done early, especially during peak season when the city hosts internationally celebrated events and festivals in Newtown and other iconic cultural districts.

Reviews of Summerview Boutique Hotel & Conference
Pleasant – Debbie from South Africa – August 13, 2025 (6/10)
Rooms are clean and comfortable.
Breakfast is also good
What could be improved: The intercom system didn't work, and they seem to be understaffed. Otherwise a good stay 😌Very Good – Grobler from South Africa – August 3, 2025 (8/10)
After a truly disappointing experience with another guesthouse, I ended up booking here very last-minute—and what a relief it was! Even though my arrival was sudden and the room was still being prepared, I was warmly welcomed and offered a complimentary drink while I waited.
The receptionist who assisted me was incredibly kind, patient, and genuinely friendly. That small act of hospitality set the tone for the rest of my stay. It’s exactly the kind of thoughtful service and care you hope for when travelling, especially after a stressful day.
I truly appreciated the professionalism and the personal touch. Highly recommended!Brilliant junior staff and generally a good stay – Carla from Mozambique – April 16, 2025 (8/10)
KG, Kagmotso, Nomsa were exceptional they went above and beyond their duties to ensure my stay was great thank you all. I am going to miss them. The lady chef (sorry I forget your name) made the most amazing Breakfasts for me thank you and the other chef Tumi made the most amazing dinners thank you. Rachael was also good thank you.
I cannot comment on Martin as I hardly saw him (Manager).
My room was very comfortable and clean , the fridge in the room was great to have .Nice big bathroom.
Good , clean and affordable.
I stayed in Room 7.
What could be improved: The seating area outside my room was neglected. In my 13 day stay it was only swept twice. The umbrellas need replacing .The gardens are beautiful but overgrown. Poor palm tree by the reception needs water and all the pot plants.
The plumbing in the bathroom needs attentionNope – Du from South Africa – February 20, 2025 (8/10)
Beautiful garden – location good
What could be improved: I hardly EVER give negative rating : that being said : shower had lukewarm water for about 45 seconds – then turned cold . I had a meeting on Sunday @9 : was told breakfast will be ready at 8 : when I had to leave at about 8:25 no sign of life near the kitchen : thus paid for “ breakfast included “ – but none was served ( at least in time ) …Good – Jason from South Africa – January 10, 2025 (7/10)
Room was very neat and comfortable. Staff friendly (but lacked a bit of professionalism). Location very convenient! Area nice and quiet at night.
What could be improved: Unfortunately, there was a conference being held at the guest house over the last few days. Parking was difficult and there wasn't a separate breakfast area for individual guests not part of the conference – rather uncomfortable for someone wanting a peaceful start to the day. No communication from staff or management about this. Ended up leaving without breakfast.Very Good – Gerald from South Africa – December 13, 2024 (8/10)
Space to walk in the pleasant gardens
What could be improved: The Hotel was not ready for me, together with another guest. We had to wait a long time for someone to drive to the Hotel and get the booking on the system and allocate the rooms – not a good start nor good welcome unfortunately. We were told breakfast was 8am but thankfully the very nice chef was ready at 7am. 8am weekday is too late. I’m sure most guests are not no holiday and prefer an earlier start.Pleasant stay. Fulfilled our requirements – Subramony from South Africa – March 24, 2024 (7/10)
Lovely location ;
Friendly staff
What could be improved: No vegetarian optionsIt was good. Will see them again in September. – Mickey from South Africa – March 18, 2024 (8/10)
The hotel rooms are beautiful, very elegant and clean. The staff is very helpful and friendly. The manager works hard and seems very stressed but that makes sense if you see how busy the conference was.
What could be improved: I did not like the conference room that we had to use because of the amount of people attending. It was in the middle of a heat wave and there was no air-con, just two small fans that did not help much. Als a BIG NO, is that the water cooler in the conference room, they refilled the bottle with tap water. And they also need to plan better for urns. Half the people did not get tea and coffee during break time. This happened last year as well. We will be there in Sept 2024 again, please upgrade.Very gretaful , will visit again – Holdings from South Africa – October 18, 2023 (8/10)
PLace is nice , clean well kept
What could be improved: The wifi was weak during night periodsA pleasant place in a tranquil neighbourhood. – Viwe from South Africa – October 8, 2023 (8/10)
The hotel is located in a very peaceful neighbourhood, the breakfast is good, and the staff are supper friendly. My stay here was only one night and I enjoyed it very much. The back up power was also a great plus, to keep the air-conditioning on during the heat wave in Johannesburg.
What could be improved: Unfortunately, the dinner menu was limited during my stay on the weekend (saturday)
