Sunninghill Guest Lodges Overview

You know what struck me first about Sunninghill Guest Lodges? It’s tucked away on this quiet residential street – Lilima Crescent – where you’d never expect to find such a polished place to stay. I mean, Sunninghill itself isn’t exactly the touristy part of Johannesburg, but that’s honestly what makes this spot work so well. You’re away from the chaos but still close enough to everything that matters.

The moment you walk in, this four-star property feels more like staying at a well-connected friend’s place than some corporate hotel chain. The staff actually remember your name after one night – and I’m not talking about that forced hospitality training stuff. They genuinely seem to care about whether you found that restaurant they recommended or if the room temperature was right. The accommodations themselves are spacious in that way South African properties often are (coming from cramped European hotel rooms, it’s refreshing), with thoughtful touches like proper coffee stations and those little details that suggest someone who travels regularly designed these spaces. I particularly loved how quiet it gets at night – the residential setting means you’re not dealing with traffic noise or late-night street activity that plagues hotels in Sandton or the city center.

What really sets this place apart, though, is how it works as a base for exploring Jo’burg properly. You’re literally minutes from the M1 highway, which sounds terrible until you realize it means easy access to Rosebank, Melville, or even a day trip to the Cradle of Humankind without sitting in morning traffic for hours. The parking situation is actually stress-free – rare for this part of the world – and the security is understated but clearly professional. I stayed during a particularly busy conference season, and while other places were gouging prices or completely booked, the lodge maintained that relaxed atmosphere without feeling overwhelmed. The breakfast setup deserves a mention too – not some sad continental spread, but proper South African options alongside international choices, served in a dining area that gets gorgeous morning light. Honestly, after bouncing between various Johannesburg accommodations over the years, this is the kind of place I’d book again without hesitation. It’s got that sweet spot of being professional enough for business travelers but personal enough that you don’t feel like just another room number.

Many travelers prefer to book tours in Johannesburg through trusted local operators that provide insider knowledge about the best areas for experiencing the city’s vibrant culture and rich historical heritage.

The staff were great. So friendly and helpful.

What could be improved: Little outdated. 11am checkout would be better.

  • Very Good – Yangyanfei from China – December 21, 2024 (8/10)

    Location is good.
    Staff are friendly and helpful.

What could be improved: If there is a hair dryer, that would be perfect.

  • Tranquil Oasis in the City – Jennifer from United States – December 18, 2024 (10/10)

It's a lovely, quiet, secure location, beautiful, well kept rooms, and lush beautiful gardens, excellent staff, delicious meals. Lovely breakfast area, with a delicious full breakfast. The staff were very professional and polite. They provided an excellent daily room cleaning service, and quickly provided any extra items needed. My brother has stayed there many times and recommended we stay there as well – we weren't disappointed!

What could be improved: We didn't dislike it, but the parking is a little tight in the back, however, there was enough parking for guests and deliveries. They could use a couple more pool loungers that can be moved around, but there was enough seating at the pool.

  • A tranquil retreat – Shelley from South Africa – September 30, 2024 (9/10)

We have stayed at Sunninghill Guest Lodges several times and are never disappointed. Our room was clean and comfortable and well appointed. We enjoyed an excellent breakfast under a tree next to the swimming pool. The gardens are beautifully maintained with abundant bird life and the staff are friendly. There is always sufficient parking.

What could be improved: No complaints.

  • Friendly and beautiful. – Hentie from South Africa – September 23, 2024 (10/10)

Please check the geyser. No hot water in 2 rooms.

What could be improved: A cold shower.

  • Excellent – will be back. Loved it! – Andre from Ireland – July 27, 2024 (10/10)

The facilities were great. Staff are accommodating and very friendly and always a smile. Super clean rooms an surrounds. Quiet.

What could be improved: Only thing was that remote controls for TV, netflix and aircon take a bit of time to get used to. Need to press buttons fairly hard. But front desk staff can help

  • Exceptional – Hendrik from South Africa – July 14, 2024 (10/10)

What could be improved: Difficult to get normal TV channels

  • I would strongly recommend Sunninghill Guest Lodge to everyone I know. – Robynne from South Africa – March 14, 2024 (10/10)

I travel every month for 3 – 4 days a month and have stayed at Sunninghill for I'm sure over a year now.
It is fantastic as I feel at home when I come back with beautiful accommodation, expectational staff and the locality is perfect. I feel like I'm staying in the Oyster Box which I have stayed in many times. I look forward to my monthly trips as know I won't have problems with electricity, water or a beautiful clean room and everything that I do need is always not only met but exceeded.

What could be improved: Nothing ! As mentioned, I stay over once a month for a few days and I am so incredibly happy when I am planning my next trip.
