You know what surprised me most about Thatchfoord Lodge? It’s tucked away on this quiet residential street in Morningside Manor, but somehow it doesn’t feel like you’re staying in someone’s neighborhood – it feels like you’ve found this hidden gem that just happens to be perfectly positioned. I mean, Johannesburg can be overwhelming when you first arrive, but this little pocket feels genuinely peaceful.

The lodge itself has that authentic South African charm without trying too hard, if that makes sense. It’s a solid four-star place, and honestly, it punches above its weight in some areas. The rooms have this warm, earthy feel – lots of natural wood and local artwork that actually looks curated rather than just thrown up on walls. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night; you’re close enough to the action but far enough from the main roads that you’re not dealing with traffic noise. The staff genuinely seems to know the area well too – they pointed me toward this fantastic local coffee spot just a few blocks away that I never would have found otherwise.

Here’s the thing about staying in Morningside Manor – you get this authentic residential experience while still being reasonably close to Sandton and the business districts. I actually walked to several restaurants for dinner (something I wasn’t sure I’d be comfortable doing in Joburg), and the lodge staff was great about giving realistic advice on what’s walkable and what isn’t. The breakfast spread was surprisingly good – proper South African fare mixed with international options, and they make a mean rooibos tea. Parking was never an issue, which honestly was a relief after some horror stories I’d heard. The garden area where you can sit in the evenings has this lovely, almost rural feel despite being in the city. Sure, it’s not the flashiest place you’ll ever stay, but there’s something refreshing about a place that focuses on doing the basics really well rather than overwhelming you with amenities you’ll never use.

  Position was good for our needs.
  Well looked after by Joyce and Memory.

  What could be improved: It rained for a good deal of the time we were there and the tiles became a bit slippery so felt safer walking through the wet grass.
  Unfortunately there wasn’t hot water for showers on one morning of our stay. Was rectified but meant a bit of a wait.

  😃😀Thatchfoord Lodge is Beautifull and Clean, in a Quiet Area. Our Room Was Nice and Big With Everything We Needed.. Comfortable Bed, Shower, Fridge, TV and Tea/Coffee Station. I Spend the Weekend with My Sister at The Lodge For My Birthday, It's The Best👌👌 With Breathtaking Views of Nature Arround. Aunty Joyce, The Owner.. Such a Loving and Warm Lady 🫂 She Went Out of Her Way to Ensure We Were Comfortable and Happy. We Were Hungry on Arrival, She Drove Me to Buy Lunch. She Even Surprised Me With a Champagne 🍾 🥂 Wow! I Felt Very Special😃 THANK YOU MAM, MAY GOD BLESS YOU MORE🙏 Monica and Memory Served Us a Delicious Breakfast😋😋 and the Gardener Steven Cleaned the Pool For Us to Take a Dip 🏊‍♂️ 👙 🏊‍♀️ 👙. We Had a Good Braai 🥩🔥 The Nature Trails Along the River Were Amazing.

  Stunning location on the Sandspruit river yet very close to Sandton. Amazing birdlife on the doorstep. Joyce and the team are most welcoming and friendly- would highly recommend for an experience you wont get at a big hotel.

  The place is beautiful and clean. The staff are so friendly and Joyce goes out of her way to help with anything you need. The view is gorgeous and breakfast was delicious.
