The Apex On Smuts Overview
The Apex On Smuts sits in this leafy pocket of Rosebank that honestly feels more like a residential neighborhood than where you’d expect to find a hotel. I mean, you’re on Hood Avenue – which is basically a quiet side street – but you’re literally walking distance from the Gautrain station and all the Rosebank shopping action. It’s one of those spots where you get the best of both worlds without the constant traffic noise that plagues most Johannesburg accommodations.
What struck me first was how the place doesn’t try too hard to be flashy. The lobby’s got this understated elegance thing going on, sort of modern African without being kitschy about it. The staff actually remembered my name by day two (rare these days), and check-in was refreshingly quick – none of that endless form-filling nonsense. The rooms are spacious, which you’ll appreciate if you’ve stayed in some of Joburg’s cramped city center hotels. Mine had this great little balcony overlooking the garden area, and I loved having my morning coffee out there listening to the birds. You know what surprised me? How quiet it stays even though you’re so close to everything. The only time I really heard street noise was during morning rush hour, and even then it wasn’t bad.
The four-star rating feels spot-on – it’s definitely a step up from your basic business hotel but doesn’t have the stuffiness of the big luxury chains. Their restaurant does decent breakfasts (the eggs Benedict actually impressed me), though I’d skip dinner there and walk five minutes to one of the excellent spots in Rosebank Mall or The Zone instead. Pool area’s lovely for an afternoon swim, and there’s always parking – which anyone who’s driven in Johannesburg will tell you is worth its weight in gold. I stayed there during a busy conference week and never had trouble finding a spot. The gym’s small but functional, and they’ve got reliable WiFi throughout, which matters when you’re trying to get work done. Honestly, for the price point and location, it hits that sweet spot where you feel looked after without paying through the nose for unnecessary frills.

What could be improved: Cleanliness must be improvedComfortable – Danielle from United States – January 18, 2025 (8/10)
The location was great . The property is nice . The security is friendly. I felt safe .
What could be improved: I had 2 issues . One, the washer/dryer didn’t work. It washed my clothes but didn’t dry them . Of course I went to use the dryer option on my last day right before I was leaving so I had to pack wet clothes . Two, there was no AC in the entire unit ! They did put a fan in my room but the apartment was a bit stuffy . This would not stop me from rebooking the property, but it was something to note .Wonderful – Mandisa from South Africa – January 2, 2025 (9/10)
Staff were great help, friendly and receptive.
