I’ll be honest – I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to The Ashford on Ashford Road in Parkwood. The area’s pretty residential, you know, not where you’d typically hunt for a hotel, but that actually turned out to be exactly what made this place so special. This four-star spot sits quietly in what feels more like a neighborhood than a tourist zone, which means you get that authentic slice of Johannesburg life without the chaos.

The moment you step inside, there’s this immediate sense that someone actually cares about the details here. The lobby has this warm, lived-in elegance – not stuffy, not trying too hard, just genuinely comfortable. I mean, when a place manages a 9.6 rating, you expect something good, but The Ashford delivers in ways that surprised me. The staff remembers your name after day one (and they mean it when they ask how your morning was), and honestly, that goes a long way when you’re far from home. The rooms are spacious in that satisfying way where you can actually open your suitcase without rearranging all the furniture, and the beds – well, let’s just say I had to check what mattress they use because I slept better there than I do at home.

What really won me over was how they handle the little things that other places miss. The Wi-Fi actually works throughout the property, parking is straightforward and secure (which matters more in Joburg than people realize), and the breakfast spread changes up just enough that you’re not eating identical meals if you stay for a few days. The location in Parkwood turned out to be brilliant too – you’re close enough to the main attractions but far enough out that you can walk around the neighborhood in the evenings and feel like you’re seeing how people actually live here. There’s a local coffee spot about two blocks away that the front desk pointed me toward, and I ended up going back three mornings in a row. You know what though? The real test of any place is whether you’d choose to stay there again, and I’m already looking at dates for my next trip back.

  Some of the warmest staff ever—an incredibly thoughtful team taking care of your room, breakfast, and any questions you may have. Literally offered us a car to go to lunch once. The inner lobby space is so welcoming, with soft music playing into the night and a help-yourself, self-pay bar.

  The breakfast were lovely, the room was super comfortable and clean. I really enjoyed the coffee machine they have as well. The location was amazing, only a 7 minute walk away from the mall, and a 7 minute drive away from the zoo.

  One of the best local B&B’s we’ve stayed at. The accommodation decor and setting was charming, exceptionally clean and very safe. The location is central to popular activities. Zanele, Abbi and Sinegugu are wonderful hosts and we felt welcome and comfortable at all times.
  Breakfast was delicious and hearty. We are appreciative that the hosts went out of their way to accommodate vegan dietary requirements.
