I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to The Base Apartment on Surrey Avenue, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like a pretty standard building in Randburg. But you know what? Sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t try too hard to impress you from the street.

This four-star spot turned out to be one of those hidden gems that actually gets the apartment-hotel concept right. The moment you step inside, there’s this immediate sense that someone put real thought into making it feel like a proper home base rather than just another sterile hotel room. The apartments themselves are surprisingly spacious – I mean, you can actually spread out your stuff without playing Tetris with your luggage. The kitchenettes aren’t just for show either; they’ve got proper-sized fridges and everything you need if you want to grab groceries from the Pick n Pay down the road instead of eating out every night. Speaking of eating out, you’re perfectly positioned here in Johannesburg to explore some fantastic local spots, though honestly, after a long day of meetings or sightseeing, sometimes you just want to cook something simple and crash on that surprisingly comfortable couch.

What really sold me on this place was the little details that matter when you’re staying somewhere for more than a night or two. The Wi-Fi actually works properly (trust me, this isn’t always a given), there’s decent water pressure in the showers, and the air conditioning doesn’t sound like a helicopter landing on your roof. The staff genuinely seems to care about making your stay work – not in that over-the-top fake way, but in a practical, problem-solving kind of way that I really appreciated. Parking is sorted without any drama, which anyone who’s driven around Jo’burg will tell you is worth its weight in gold. The location itself is pretty smart too – you’re in Randburg which means you can get to Sandton for business stuff easily enough, but you’re not paying those crazy Sandton hotel prices. It’s also refreshingly quiet at night, which was a pleasant surprise. I stayed here during a pretty busy work trip and found myself actually looking forward to getting back to the apartment each evening, which doesn’t happen often when I’m traveling. The whole setup just works well for people who need more than a basic hotel room but don’t want to deal with the hassle of hunting for short-term rental apartments in an unfamiliar area.

  It was clean! Had everything I needed for the short stay. Really enjoyed everything about this apartment. Very thoughtful host with little gestures like having bottled water available- seeing as I forgot to by water. Access to Netflix to pass the time. Safe parking. Nice security.
  
  What could be improved: It’s close to collages and learning institutions therefore young people and students stay in the apartments and so there was some noise on the first night – loud singing and shouting on the corridors till late. I was there for a course – so would have appreciated the peace and quiet- other than that it was good 👍

  Nice apartment for a business stay, close to all the main areas and easily accesses. Security is very good. Apartment is very cosy even without the heater
