Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard the name The Base, central affordable luxury, I rolled my eyes a little. I mean, how many hotels promise “affordable luxury” and deliver neither? But this four-star spot in Randburg actually gets it right, which caught me off guard in the best way possible.

The thing about this place is that it sits on Surrey Avenue in a part of Johannesburg that’s sort of perfectly positioned if you know the area. You’re not in the thick of Sandton’s chaos, but you’re close enough that a quick Uber ride gets you anywhere you actually want to be. I stayed here during a work trip last year, and honestly, the location grew on me fast – there’s this great little coffee spot just down the road that locals hit up in the mornings, and you can actually walk around the neighborhood without feeling sketchy about it, which isn’t something you can say about every part of Joburg.

What really sold me on The Base was the attention to detail that you don’t expect at this price point. The rooms have this modern, clean vibe without trying too hard – think crisp white linens, decent lighting for actually reading, and a shower that doesn’t leave you wondering if the water pressure gave up halfway through. The staff genuinely seems to care, too, which makes a difference when you’re dealing with flight delays or need restaurant recommendations that aren’t just the obvious tourist traps. I remember the front desk guy telling me about this incredible local braai place that I never would have found otherwise. The common areas have a sort of understated elegance – nothing flashy, but comfortable couches where you can actually work on your laptop without your back killing you, and the Wi-Fi doesn’t cut out every ten minutes like some places I could mention. You know what I appreciated most? The little things worked. The elevator didn’t take forever, the air conditioning wasn’t fighting a losing battle against Joburg heat, and checkout was painless. It’s the kind of place where business travelers can get stuff done, but it doesn’t feel sterile or corporate. Plus, parking is sorted, which anyone who’s driven in Johannesburg will tell you is worth its weight in gold.

  What could be improved: The shower head & overall water heating system is BAD BAD. So basically even when the instant water heating system is turned on & you wait for it for a long while, the water will still be cold.
