The thing about this hotel is that it actually delivers on that “secure and affordable comfort” promise without feeling like they’re cutting corners where it matters. I mean, Randburg isn’t exactly the tourist hotspot of Johannesburg, but that’s kind of the point – you’re getting genuine value here, not paying inflated prices because you’re next to some famous landmark. The area’s got this lived-in feel that I actually prefer to the more polished parts of town. There’s a Pick n Pay practically around the corner, and you’ll find some solid local spots for dinner within walking distance if you’re not afraid to venture out a bit.

What struck me most was how they’ve managed to nail the basics really well. The rooms are clean – I’m talking properly clean, not just surface-level tidy – and the beds are honestly more comfortable than some four-star places I’ve stayed at. The WiFi actually works (shocking, I know), and the water pressure in the shower is decent, which matters more than you’d think after a long day exploring Jo’burg. Security is clearly a priority here too, which gives you that peace of mind when you’re in an unfamiliar city. The parking situation is sorted, and you don’t have to stress about your car overnight. Staff at check-in were genuinely helpful rather than just going through the motions – they knew the area well enough to give me actual useful directions, not just the standard tourist spiel. The only minor thing I’d mention is that if you’re a super light sleeper, bring earplugs – Surrey Avenue gets a bit of traffic noise during peak hours, but it settles down nicely in the evenings. All in all, if you’re looking for a place that gives you solid comfort without the pretense or the hefty price tag, The Base delivers exactly what it promises.
