Honestly, when I first pulled up to The Chill Spot on Melville Road, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect – the name had me thinking it might be some sort of backpacker hostel situation. But stepping into this four-star spot in Illovo Central actually surprised me in the best way. You know what struck me first? How they’ve managed to create this genuinely relaxed atmosphere without sacrificing any of the polish you’d want from a proper hotel. The lobby has this interesting mix of contemporary African art and comfortable seating that doesn’t feel like it’s trying too hard, if that makes sense.

The location is actually pretty smart – being right in the heart of Sandton means you’re close enough to all the business district action, but Illovo Central has this slightly more residential feel that keeps things from getting too hectic. I mean, you’re literally walking distance from Nelson Mandela Square when you want that buzz, but you can also just wander down to the local cafés on Rivonia Road for a proper flat white without fighting tourist crowds. The parking situation is decent too, which anyone who’s driven around Sandton will tell you is no small thing. I stayed there during a particularly busy conference week and never had issues getting a spot.

What really sets this place apart though is how the staff genuinely seem to get the whole “chill” concept – they’re professional but not stuffy, helpful without being hovering. My room on the 14th floor had these floor-to-ceiling windows that gave me this sweeping view over the Sandton skyline, and honestly, watching the sun set behind the Johannesburg towers while sipping a glass of wine from their room service menu became my nightly ritual. The rooms themselves strike that perfect balance between modern amenities and actual comfort – you know how some hotels give you a beautiful space that’s somehow impossible to actually relax in? Not the case here. The beds are properly comfortable, the air conditioning works without sounding like a jet engine, and there’s enough space to spread out your stuff without feeling cramped. I will say the walls could be slightly thicker – you might catch bits of conversation from neighboring rooms during busy periods, but it’s not deal-breaking by any means. For what you’re getting in this part of Johannesburg, especially considering how easy it is to get around from here (the Gautrain station is close enough for airport runs), The Chill Spot delivers exactly what it promises. It’s become my go-to when I’m in town for work but still want to feel like I’m staying somewhere with personality rather than just another corporate box.

  What could be improved: 1 bath drying towel for 2 nights stay is diabolical
  No toilet door next to the kitchen is unhygienic
  The cental aircon is ineffective when its very cold add an extra blanket, heater or throw!
  DSTV app functionality is the pits only plays 30 seconds and has problem because of slow internet connection
  Room was not cleaned even though sign was outside
  And its not a One bedroom apartment its a studio/bed&Breakfast at best

  I liked the location and the VIEW….. oh my God… everything was working well at the apartment. I loved that they’re very security conscious. I’m going to choose the place anytime I come around.
  
  What could be improved: It would’ve been great if you added a rice cooker to the. Appliances. Aside that, everything was perfect.
