I’ll be honest, when I first pulled up to The Cliffside Boutique Getaway on Frederick Drive, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like a quiet residential street in Randburg. But you know what? Sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t scream for attention from the main road. This five-star boutique property completely changed my perspective on what luxury can look like when it’s done right.

The moment you step inside, there’s this immediate sense that someone actually cares about every single detail. I mean, we’re talking about a place with a 9.8 rating, and honestly, after staying there, I get it. The staff remembers your name after one conversation, and not in that forced, corporate way – it feels genuine. What really struck me was how they’ve managed to create this cocoon of tranquility while still being incredibly accessible to everything Johannesburg has to offer. You’re close enough to Sandton’s business district that you won’t spend your life in traffic, but far enough removed that you actually forget you’re in one of Africa’s busiest cities. The rooms themselves are something else entirely – each one feels like it was designed individually rather than stamped out from some hotel chain playbook. I particularly loved how they’ve incorporated local art without making it feel like a museum, and the bathrooms… well, let’s just say I spent way more time soaking in that tub than I care to admit.

What really sets this place apart though is how it handles the little things that most hotels completely overlook. The parking is actually secure and spacious (anyone who’s driven in Joburg will appreciate this), the WiFi works everywhere on the property, and they somehow manage to keep everything quiet despite being on a fairly busy street. I stayed during what I later learned was peak season, but you’d never know it from how attentive the service remained. The breakfast spread changes daily and features ingredients sourced from local suppliers – not because it’s trendy, but because it actually tastes better. There’s also this lovely terrace area where you can catch sunset views over the city that most people never discover because it’s tucked away from the main reception area. If you’re the type who values authentic experiences over Instagram-worthy lobbies, this place will absolutely deliver.

  A wonderful warm welcome, by our third visit we felt like family. The breakfasts are superb and we also had a great dinner. Nothing is too much trouble. We also recommend using their transport service. Extremely comfortable quality cars.

  The property mountains views and garden views, the property manager Cindy gave us a very warm wellcome. We enjoyed the wellcome snacks .All staff members gave us excellent service, the guy who assisted us with carrying our luggages from parking to our room, the ladies in the kitchen are so good, breakfast and dinner was well presented and delicious. Some snacks in our room as well, our room with mountain view was amazing with big space and bigger bathroom with all the toletries required. If you enjoy being spoiled with food Cliffside is the place to go, they feed you throughout your whole stay

  We had a lovely 3-night stay here to relax before flying home to the UK after a safari holiday. The atmosphere created by all the staff was indeed relaxed, welcoming and friendly. There were lots of nice little touches and attention to detail making the environment very pleasant.
  Our room (Sunrise) was bright and spacious with a great view towards the west from the balcony. The views were even better on the path up to the cliff (even though we didn’t quite make it to the top!)
  The quality of the food was excellent and made us change our plans from eating out to dining in for all of our meals.
  I hope we'll be able to visit again someday to spend longer and explore Johannesburg a bit more.
