I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to The Fitz Apartment on Kernick Avenue, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. The area’s got this interesting mix of residential charm and urban energy that you don’t find everywhere in Johannesburg, and this four-star spot sits right in the sweet spot of it all.

What actually won me over was how genuinely thoughtful everything felt once I got inside. The apartments (and yes, they really are proper apartments, not just hotel rooms with a kitchenette shoved in the corner) have this lived-in quality that makes you feel less like a tourist and more like you’re crashing at a well-organized friend’s place. I mean, there are actual coffee mugs that match, decent Wi-Fi that doesn’t cut out every ten minutes, and – this might sound small but it matters – proper hangers in the closets. You know what I’m talking about if you’ve ever tried to hang anything on those flimsy hotel wire things that barely hold a t-shirt.

The location really grew on me too. Kernick Avenue isn’t one of those flashy hotel strips, which honestly works in its favor. You’re close enough to the main action without dealing with the constant traffic noise, and there’s something nice about walking to the corner café in the morning and actually chatting with locals instead of just other tourists. The staff seemed to get this vibe too – they’re helpful without being overly formal, and they actually know the neighborhood well enough to give you real recommendations, not just the standard tourist checklist. Parking was surprisingly stress-free, which anyone who’s driven in Johannesburg will appreciate. The only minor thing that caught me off guard was how quiet it gets in the evenings – not a complaint really, just different from what you might expect if you’re used to staying in the busier hotel districts. I ended up really liking it, actually, especially after long days out exploring the city. There’s something to be said for a place where you can actually unwind without feeling like you’re missing out on something happening right outside your window.

  This is a beautiful apartment in Melrose Arch. It was perfect for us to to use as a base to easily explore the immediate area and to visit other places around Johannesburg. They were very responsive to any queries and helped me to get back my Kindle when I accidentally left it behind. I would stay here again if I was visiting Johannesburg.

  We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The facilities were great—clean, comfortable, and convenient. The location was also ideal, being within walking distance from Melrose Arch, which made getting around very convenient. Overall, a wonderful experience, and we would happily stay here again.
  
  What could be improved: We found the lack of air-conditioning or fans made the space a bit stuffy, especially at night. For safety reasons, we kept the windows closed as there were no burglar guards, which added to the heat. Despite this, everything else was great

  The apartment is in the perfect location. It is a 2 minute walk into the Melrose Arch district. We used this apartment as a base while attending a conference. It was very comfortable and surprisingly quiet.
  
  What could be improved: It is north facing so gets a lot of sun. It might be a challenge in summer as there are no fans or AC in the rooms.
