I’ll be honest – when I first walked into The Franklin Luxury Apartments on Pritchard Street, I wasn’t expecting much from the exterior. But you know what? Sometimes the best places in Johannesburg are the ones that surprise you from the inside out. This four-star property is actually one of those hidden gems that locals seem to know about but somehow stays off most tourists’ radar.

The thing about staying here is that you’re right in the thick of things without feeling like you’re in a typical hotel bubble. I mean, Pritchard Street itself has this interesting energy – it’s sort of gritty in that authentic Joburg way, but the Franklin manages to create this calm, upscale bubble once you’re through the doors. The apartments themselves are genuinely spacious (and I’m not just saying that because I’m used to cramped hotel rooms). We’re talking proper living spaces with kitchens that you’d actually want to cook in, which honestly saved me a fortune during my week-long stay. The staff at reception were pretty switched on too – they knew the area well enough to steer me toward the good coffee spots nearby and away from the streets that get a bit sketchy after dark.

What really sold me on the place, though, was how quiet it gets at night despite being so central. You’d think you’d hear traffic or the usual city noise, but the building’s setup somehow buffers most of that. The only real downside I noticed was that the Wi-Fi could be a bit patchy in some of the rooms – not a deal-breaker, but worth mentioning if you’re planning to work from there. The whole setup feels more like borrowing a well-appointed friend’s apartment than staying in a hotel, which some people love and others might find a bit too hands-off. Parking was straightforward enough, though you’ll want to ask about the secure options if you’re driving something fancy. All in all, it’s the kind of place that grows on you – not flashy or Instagram-perfect, but solid and comfortable in a way that makes you feel like you could actually live there for a while.
