I’ll be honest – I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to The Giglio Boutique Hotel at Zevenster on Van Buuren Road. Bedfordview isn’t exactly where you’d think to look for a five-star gem, but that’s exactly what makes this place so refreshing. It’s tucked away in this quiet residential area where you can actually hear birds in the morning instead of traffic, which is pretty rare for Johannesburg.

The moment you walk through those doors, you realize this isn’t your typical corporate hotel trying too hard to impress everyone. The owners clearly put thought into every single detail – I mean, even the bathroom toiletries smell like they were sourced from some small Italian village (which, knowing the Italian influence here, they probably were). The rooms feel more like staying in a sophisticated friend’s guest house than a hotel room, with these gorgeous Italian furnishings that somehow don’t feel stuffy or museum-like. You know what really got me? The fact that they actually have proper blackout curtains that work – something you’d think would be standard everywhere but definitely isn’t.

What sets this place apart is how the staff treats you like they genuinely want you to love Johannesburg as much as they do. The concierge gave me directions to this incredible local coffee spot just five minutes away that I never would’ve found otherwise, and when I mentioned I was nervous about driving in the area (first time in Bedfordview), they walked me through the safest routes and even offered to arrange transport. The location is actually perfect if you want to explore the East Rand without dealing with the chaos of central Joburg – you’re close enough to everything but far enough away that you can sleep peacefully. Parking is secure and free, which honestly feels like a luxury these days. The breakfast spread is small but everything tastes like it was made that morning, not reheated from yesterday. I did notice they get busy during conference season, so if you’re planning to visit between March and September, definitely book ahead. The only tiny complaint I’d have is that the WiFi can be a bit spotty in some of the garden-facing rooms, but honestly, maybe that’s not such a bad thing when you’re trying to unwind. This place has earned every bit of its 9.5 rating – it’s one of those rare finds that makes you want to keep it secret so it doesn’t get too popular.
