I’ll be honest – when I first heard about The Haystack on Cowley, I wasn’t sure what to expect from a hotel tucked away in Bryanston. But walking up to this four-star property on Cowley Road, you immediately get that “oh, this is different” feeling. The building has this understated elegance that doesn’t scream for attention, which I actually appreciated after staying at some of the flashier places around Johannesburg.

What really struck me was how the staff seemed to genuinely know the neighborhood – not just the usual tourist spots, but where to grab the best coffee at 6 AM (there’s a little place two streets over that opens early) or which route to take to avoid the morning traffic snarls. The rooms are thoughtfully designed without being fussy about it. I mean, you’ve got everything you need, plus those little touches that show someone was actually thinking about how people live in a space for a few days. The Wi-Fi is solid throughout – I tested it because, let’s face it, that’s become non-negotiable. The beds are genuinely comfortable, not just hotel-marketing comfortable, and the bathrooms have that satisfying water pressure you hope for but don’t always get.

You know what I liked most? The whole place has this lived-in quality that makes you feel like you’re staying somewhere real, not just passing through a generic hotel experience. Bryanston itself is one of those areas that locals love but tourists often overlook – it’s got character without the chaos of central Joburg, and you’re still close enough to everything that matters. The Haystack fits right into that vibe. Parking is straightforward (which, if you’ve driven in Johannesburg, you’ll appreciate), and the neighborhood feels safe for evening walks. I stayed during what turned out to be a busy conference week, and even then the common areas never felt overcrowded. The breakfast – well, it’s not trying to be everything to everyone, but what they do, they do well. Fresh ingredients, local options mixed with the standards, and coffee that actually tastes like coffee. I’d definitely come back, which honestly isn’t something I say about every place I stay.

  I thoroughly enjoy staying at this property. The hosts are very communicative, but not not to the point of overstepping host bounds. They took my previous feedback and implemented it (I only had one teeny tiny thing – I felt the space could use a small pot of instant coffee – and at my next stay there was coffee for me to enjoy whenever I wanted!). The main thing that I enjoy about this property is that when I travel to JHB – it is for work – staying for a week at a time in a place that is cozy and just has a great comfortable feel to it really makes all of the difference. This was my second stay there and I do hope that when I travel to JHB for work again that the property is available each time!
