The Haystack On Homestead Overview

I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to The Haystack On Homestead, tucked away on a quiet stretch of Homestead Road, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The name had me curious, and the location in Rivonia felt like one of those hidden gems you stumble across rather than actively seek out. But you know what? Sometimes those are exactly the places that surprise you most.

This four-star spot sits in what I’d call the sweet spot of Johannesburg’s northern suburbs – close enough to Sandton’s business district that you’re not battling traffic for hours, but far enough from the main Rivonia Road chaos that you actually get some peace. The property itself has this understated elegance that doesn’t try too hard, if that makes sense. The rooms are genuinely comfortable (I mean, the beds are the kind where you actually sleep through the night), and there’s something refreshing about a place that focuses on getting the basics absolutely right rather than overwhelming you with flashy extras you’ll never use. The staff here really knows their stuff too – they’ll point you toward the good coffee spots on 7th Avenue or help you navigate the quickest route to OR Tambo without making you feel like you’re bothering them.

What really sold me on this place, though, is how it feels like a proper retreat from the city without being completely disconnected. The Rivonia area has this nice residential vibe during the day, and honestly, it’s one of the quieter pockets you’ll find this close to the business hub. Parking is straightforward (which anyone who’s driven around Sandton will appreciate), and you’re genuinely close to some solid dining options without the tourist trap pricing. I stayed here during a particularly busy conference season, and while other places were completely booked or charging ridiculous rates, The Haystack maintained that relaxed atmosphere. The morning routine here is pretty lovely too – you can actually sit outside with coffee without dealing with constant traffic noise, which is rarer than you’d think in this part of town. It’s the kind of place where business travelers can decompress properly, but it doesn’t feel stuffy or corporate. Actually, I’d recommend it just as much for a weekend getaway if you want to explore this side of Joburg without the usual hotel scene intensity.

  • Lovely except for the construction noise across the road – Rosemary from South Africa – April 6, 2025 (8/10)

Everything about the property and staff was perfect but you should have told us about the never ending noise across the street from the building site. It took away any thought of a restful stay

  • Exceptional – Kamogelo from South Africa – March 14, 2025 (10/10)

Very clean and spacious room I loved everything about the room the stuff where very friendly to me and my wife we had a lovely time staying the very Cousy stay

What could be improved: The location was very hard to find but the staff helped us find it so big up

  • Comfortable, clean and well positioned guesthouse. – Reg from South Africa – February 14, 2025 (8/10)

The room was very comfortable and well equipped.

What could be improved: Only 2 coffee pods tor 3 days. The R1000 cash deposit and fee to use the braai was new to me and slightly inconvenient and should be included at the price as I really battled to find an ATM before check in. Construction site opposite the road very noisy during the day.

  • Wonderful – Thabisile from South Africa – January 28, 2025 (9/10)

The host was exceptional, and she made sure we were okay all the time. I loved her very much, thank you Zanele. You made us feel at home, definitely coming soon….

  • Very Good – Koketso from South Africa – January 3, 2025 (8/10)

    Everything was just as advertised!

What could be improved: The shower worked incorrectly. Opening the tap closed the tap while closing the tap opened it, it was frustrating.

  • Very Good – Brendan from United Kingdom – December 30, 2024 (8/10)

    Friendly helpful staff. Near restaurants/shops

  • It was a home away from home….quiet area..the staff made my birthday weekend memorable…I will definitely come back – Tlhologelo from South Africa – October 1, 2024 (10/10)

    I liked everything about it

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Small, very attractive and clean, self catering complex, which is very secure and comfortable. – Claudio from South Africa – September 2, 2024 (8/10)

With the exception that there were construction activities taking place across the road which made a lot of noise upon my arrival as well as on a Saturday and the fire detection alarm that went off screaming as I was making toast, the stay is very nice and comfortable. I walked comfortably and confidently, during the day time to a very nice shopping complex, where a lot of good restaurants are found. Nice comfortable bed.

What could be improved: That there were construction activities taking place right across the road, however this is a temporary issue, the hosts could have inform the possible guests ahead of time.
