The Hide in Randburg Overview

The Hide in Randburg is one of those places that surprises you – in a good way, mostly. I’ll be honest, when I first pulled up to this three-star spot on Stamvrug Crescent, I wasn’t expecting much. The street’s pretty quiet, which actually turned out to be a blessing since you’re not dealing with the usual Joburg traffic noise at night. You know what struck me first? The name makes total sense once you see it – it really does feel tucked away, almost like a secret that locals are keeping to themselves.

The whole vibe here is relaxed in that distinctly South African way. I mean, it’s not trying to be fancy, but there’s something genuine about the place that you don’t always get with bigger hotel chains. The staff actually remembers your name after the first day, which sounds small but makes a real difference when you’re staying somewhere for more than just a quick overnight. The rooms are clean and honestly more spacious than I expected for the price point – though I’d recommend asking for one that doesn’t face the street side if you’re a light sleeper. There’s this little courtyard area where people tend to gather in the evenings, and you’ll often find yourself chatting with other travelers or even some locals who know the owners.

What I really appreciated was how easy it is to get around from here. Randburg isn’t exactly the tourist center of Johannesburg, but that’s part of its charm – you get a feel for how regular people actually live here. The taxi drivers know the place well enough, and if you’re driving yourself, parking is never really an issue, which anyone who’s dealt with Sandton or the city center will tell you is worth its weight in gold. The breakfast situation is pretty straightforward – nothing fancy, but they do a proper South African breakfast that’ll keep you going. I actually ended up having some of my best conversations over morning coffee there, including getting insider tips about which parts of town to explore and which to maybe skip. Look, it’s not going to win any design awards, and the Wi-Fi can be a bit temperamental during load-shedding hours, but there’s something authentic about staying here that you just don’t get at the bigger places. For travelers who want to experience Johannesburg without paying tourist prices or dealing with the sometimes overwhelming energy of the main hotel districts, this place hits a sweet spot.

Reviews of The Hide in Randburg

  • A diamond in the rough – Jesse from South Africa – July 15, 2025 (8/10)

    Good atmosphere
Host goes out of her way to sort out any issues, however, this was not easy as the maintenance and fitting of finishes were lacking, I refer to mirrors, TVs, plugs and adaptors fittings in bathrooms, etc.

What could be improved: Rooms need maintenance and refreshing also main entrance can do with a bit of tiding and decor.
