I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to The Houghton Hotel, Spa, Wellness & Golf on Lloys Ellis Avenue, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. This five-star property actually delivers, and I mean that in the best possible way.

The thing about staying in Houghton is that you’re sort of in this perfect sweet spot – you’re technically in Johannesburg but it feels like you’ve escaped to some leafy suburb where the air is cleaner and the pace slows down just enough. The hotel sits on these gorgeous grounds that honestly made me forget I was in one of Africa’s biggest cities. I spent way too much time just wandering around the gardens, and the golf course? Even if you’re not into golf (I’m definitely not), it’s pretty spectacular to look at. The morning mist rolling across those greens with the city skyline in the distance – you’ll want to wake up early for that view, trust me.

What really got me was how they’ve managed to balance that grand hotel feeling without making you feel like you need to whisper in the lobby. The spa is where I basically lived for two days straight, and the wellness facilities are the real deal – not just some afterthought tacked onto a business hotel. The staff actually knows what they’re doing, which sounds obvious but you’d be surprised how rare that is. I had this one treatment (can’t remember the exact name) that left me feeling like I’d discovered some secret to life. The pools are heated year-round, which is clutch because Joburg evenings can get surprisingly chilly, even in summer. Parking was never an issue, and honestly, after dealing with the chaos of downtown Johannesburg traffic, pulling into their calm, secure grounds felt like entering another world. The rooms are spacious – I mean actually spacious, not hotel-brochure spacious – and the beds are the kind you sink into and immediately start planning how to recreate at home. One small thing that impressed me: the soundproofing is excellent, so even though you’re not far from busy areas, you’ll sleep like a baby.

To visit Johannesburg during the vibrant spring season from September to November, travelers should plan ahead as this cosmopolitan city attracts millions of visitors seeking authentic South African experiences and world-class cultural attractions.

  Good choice! We arrived late in the day (19:30) to discover a well appointed room, which was very clean, and quite comfortable. The food in the restaurant was fine – we were served by an attentive staff and found the prices reasonable. I would stay here again!
