The KEDESAN Huis – Guest House Overview

You know what caught me off guard about The KEDESAN Huis – Guest House? I wasn’t expecting much from a three-star place tucked away on Ripley Road, but this little gem actually delivers way more character than those cookie-cutter hotel chains scattered around Johannesburg. I mean, the name itself had me curious – KEDESAN sounds almost mystical, doesn’t it? – and when I pulled up to number 35, I found this charming guest house that feels more like staying at a well-traveled friend’s place than your typical tourist accommodation.

The thing about Ripley Road is that it’s one of those quiet residential streets where you can actually hear birds in the morning instead of constant traffic – honestly, such a relief after dealing with the chaos of OR Tambo earlier that day. The owners have done something really smart with the space; it’s got that homey South African hospitality vibe without feeling amateur or thrown together. My room had these lovely local touches that you just don’t get at the big chains, and the morning coffee situation was surprisingly good (I’m picky about coffee, so this matters). The Wi-Fi actually worked consistently too, which – let’s be real – isn’t always a given at smaller places like this.

What I really appreciated was how the staff knew the neighborhood inside and out. When I mentioned wanting to find decent food that wasn’t touristy nonsense, they pointed me toward this incredible local spot just a few streets over that I never would have discovered on my own. The guest house sits in one of those areas where you’re close enough to get into the city center without much fuss, but far enough out that you’re not dealing with the noise and intensity 24/7. Parking was straightforward – no stressing about finding a spot or paying ridiculous fees. Look, I’ll be honest, it’s not going to blow your mind with luxury amenities or anything, but sometimes you just want a clean, comfortable place run by people who actually care about making your stay pleasant. The KEDESAN Huis delivers on that front, and for what you’re paying, it’s honestly pretty solid value for money in a city where accommodation costs can get out of hand quickly.

To visit Johannesburg during the vibrant spring season from September to November, travelers should plan ahead as this cosmopolitan city attracts millions of visitors seeking authentic South African experiences and world-class cultural attractions.

Reviews of The KEDESAN Huis – Guest House

  • Overall it was okay, we didn’t like the area the accommodation was in. – Reamogetswe from South Africa – July 7, 2025 (7/10)

It was clean , the building was secure.

What could be improved: The location, the was no microwave oven. We didn’t have towels in our room.

  • Very Good – Maonei from South Africa – July 6, 2025 (8/10)

Mimi is a great host who takes her time to listen to your needs. We enjoyed our stay and the rooms are a home away from home. The staff was very friendly and respectful

What could be improved: They should probably give gate remotes to those driving so as not to inconvinience the staff on duty.

  • It was good, but there is always a room for improvement ❤ – Zono from South Africa – April 12, 2025 (7/10)

The property is very close to the Univeristy of Johannersburg, highly recommended if you are to attend graduation. It is a home away from home , neat and clean and has friendly staff.

What could be improved: For self catering kindly provide cutlery (complete set) and crockery (white)

  • Good – Mpumelelo from Eswatini – August 8, 2024 (7/10)

What could be improved: The place was peaceful

  • Good – Leratolapappa from South Africa – December 16, 2023 (7/10)

Clean environment. Nice and decent staff members ready to help at time.

What could be improved: Having to wait for someone to open the gate for you. That isn't safe at all.

  • Good – Jacques from South Africa – October 12, 2023 (7/10)

No breakfast options, although menu in room.

What could be improved: Had no gate access, had to call someone to open everytime.

  • Very Good – Muzi from Eswatini – September 16, 2023 (8/10)

    The location.

What could be improved: Guests are only given a room key and are NOT given a key to leave or access the property. I returned late in the evening and had to wait for some minutes to be let in. This is very risky. Also the listed number on the booking confirmation always goes to voicemail.

  • It was OK – Kwamena from Ghana – August 1, 2023 (7/10)

    Safety

What could be improved: Poor wifi connection

  • Good – Tiajuana from South Africa – July 30, 2023 (7/10)

What could be improved: The geyser was not working, no warm water…difficult to find staff to enquire about it and network was poor..was a struggle to contact staff for entering premises apon arrival call line unavailable

  • Very Good – Lireko from South Africa – July 16, 2023 (8/10)

The staff was very considerate and friendly.

What could be improved: There was no water my entire stay but it wasn't the BnB's fault. The entire area was affected by the water cut.
