You know what caught me off guard about The Loft? It’s tucked away on Campbell Road in Parktown, and honestly, I almost walked right past it the first time. The entrance is pretty understated – which I actually loved once I realized it was intentional. This four-star boutique place feels like someone’s incredibly stylish friend decided to open a hotel, and somehow managed to nail every single detail.

The thing about Parktown is that it’s one of those Johannesburg neighborhoods that locals know but tourists often miss entirely. You’re basically sitting on this leafy ridge above the city center, surrounded by these gorgeous old mining magnate mansions from the early 1900s. I mean, you can walk to the Origins Centre at Wits University in about ten minutes, and Zoo Lake is just down the hill if you need some green space. But here’s what I really appreciated – you’re close enough to everything that matters (Sandton’s maybe 15 minutes by car, Maboneng is totally doable), yet it feels completely removed from all that urban chaos.

The rooms are where this place really shines though. I stayed in one of their loft-style suites – hence the name, I suppose – and the space just flows beautifully. High ceilings, these massive windows that flood everything with light, and the kind of contemporary African art on the walls that actually means something rather than just filling space. The bathroom alone made me want to extend my stay; they’ve got this rainfall shower situation that’s basically perfect after a long day exploring the city. What really impressed me was the attention to small stuff – proper blackout curtains (trust me, this matters), decent water pressure, and WiFi that actually works when you need to get things done. The bed was honestly one of the most comfortable I’ve encountered in South Africa, and I’ve stayed in quite a few places here.

Parking was straightforward, which might sound boring but anyone who’s driven around Joburg knows it’s not something to take for granted. The staff seemed genuinely happy to help with recommendations too – they pointed me toward this incredible Ethiopian restaurant in nearby Melville that I never would have found otherwise. Breakfast was solid without being overly fancy, and they source a lot of ingredients locally, which I always appreciate. The only minor thing I’d mention is that weekend nights can get a bit lively since there’s a trendy bar downstairs, but honestly, the soundproofing is pretty good and it never kept me awake. Plus, it’s kind of nice knowing you can just wander down for a nightcap without having to navigate Uber or worry about parking somewhere else. With a 9.1 rating from other guests, it’s clear I’m not the only one who thinks they’ve got something special going on here.

Best attractions in Johannesburg range from the historic Gold Reef City theme park to the trendy Maboneng Precinct and elegant venues overlooking the sprawling cityscape and Constitution Hill.

  The Loft was perfectly located for us for our trip to the Wits BioHub groundbreaking. Close to the university and also close (a short Uber ride away) from Rosebank and the great shops and restaurants. Our hostess, Bee, was so welcoming and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed the great breakfasts she prepared to order and she gave us excellent recommendation on places to eat and visit. Outstanding value!
