The Maslow Hotel, Sandton Overview

You know what struck me first about The Maslow Hotel, Sandton? Walking into that lobby, there’s this immediate sense that someone actually thought about what business travelers need – and I mean really need, not just the usual corporate hotel checklist. The whole place has this understated elegance that doesn’t try too hard, which honestly feels refreshing in Johannesburg where some hotels can be a bit over the top.

The location is pretty brilliant if you’re doing business in Sandton. Right there on the corner of Rivonia and Grayston, you’re basically in the heart of everything without being stuck in one of those soulless office tower hotels. I actually walked to most of my meetings, which in Joburg is saying something – you know how spread out everything usually is here. The Gautrain station is close enough that you don’t need to stress about airport transfers, and parking wasn’t the nightmare I expected (though I’d still recommend asking about rates upfront). What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to get that not everyone staying there is South African – they’re helpful without being condescending, and the concierge actually knew useful stuff about getting around the city safely.

The rooms themselves feel properly designed for people who spend way too much time in hotels. Good lighting for actually working, not just mood lighting that looks nice but leaves you squinting at your laptop. The beds are solid – I’m talking proper sleep, not that tossing-and-turning thing you get at mediocre places. And the bathrooms, well, they’ve got those rainfall showers that actually have decent water pressure, which honestly makes such a difference after a long travel day. The four-star rating feels about right; it’s not trying to be a palace, but everything works the way it should. I did notice some road noise on the Rivonia Road side, so if you’re a light sleeper, maybe mention that when you book. The breakfast spread is better than expected too – proper South African options alongside the usual international stuff, and the coffee doesn’t taste like it’s been sitting around all morning. Look, Sandton can feel pretty corporate and sterile, but this place manages to have some actual personality while still being professional. If you’re here for business or using it as a base to explore Johannesburg properly, it’s one of those hotels where you’re not counting down the days until checkout.
