The Melville Quarters Overview
I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to The Melville Quarters on 4th Avenue, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Melville has this reputation for being the artsy, slightly bohemian corner of Johannesburg, and finding a proper four-star hotel tucked into this creative neighborhood felt almost surprising. But you know what? It works perfectly.
The thing about staying here is that you’re literally in the heart of one of Johannesburg’s most walkable areas – and I mean actually walkable, not just “African walkable” where you still need a car for everything. I spent my evenings wandering down to 7th Street (just a few blocks away) for dinner at some incredible restaurants, then stumbling back through tree-lined streets that actually feel safe after dark. The hotel itself has this understated elegance that fits right into Melville’s vibe – it’s not trying too hard to be flashy, but everything from the lobby to the rooms has this polished, contemporary feel that reminded me why it earned that solid 8.1 rating.
What really struck me was how the staff seemed to genuinely know the area. When I asked about breakfast spots, the guy at reception didn’t just rattle off tourist traps – he pointed me toward this little café around the corner that locals actually use, and mentioned which days the nearby weekend market runs. The rooms themselves are spacious by Jo’burg standards, with big windows that let in tons of light (something you don’t always get in the city center hotels). I actually slept well here, which is saying something because I’m usually pretty sensitive to street noise, but 4th Avenue stays relatively quiet at night. The parking situation is sorted – they have secure parking, which honestly is half the battle when you’re staying anywhere in Johannesburg. Check-in was smooth, no drama, and they had decent coffee in the lobby which saved me from wandering around jetlagged looking for caffeine. I mean, it’s not going to blow your mind with over-the-top luxury, but sometimes what you want is a really solid, comfortable place where everything just works and you can focus on exploring one of the city’s most interesting neighborhoods.

What could be improved: The heater wasn't workingVery Good – Katja from Slovenia – March 24, 2025 (8/10)
I arrived in Joburg after it had been raining for a week, and it was much cooler than I expected. When I asked for a heater, they promptly provided one. The rain also caused some damage in the room, but the host repaired it the same day I reported it.
What could be improved: There was a water shortage, but that wasn’t their fault. They provided extra water for such situations, which I appreciated. However, it would be much more convenient if they informed guests in advance when the water would be unavailable, so I could plan things like showering accordingly. My stay was lovely and the lady of the house was a good host. Everything was Superb. – Kgomotso from South Africa – March 11, 2025 (8/10)

What could be improved: Would have been nice to have the wifi password written somewhere in the room. The hosts had gone to bed by the time I got there (which is fine) but I forgot to ask for it upon check in and ran out of data so was a bit stuck.Tidy place.Wouldnt mind staying in the place again.Area is waterless. – Simon from South Africa – December 20, 2024 (7/10)
