I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to The Monroe Luxury Apartments on Sturdee Avenue, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. The name says “luxury” but it’s a three-star place, so I mean, you know how that goes sometimes. But honestly? This spot surprised me in the best way possible.

The thing about staying in Johannesburg is that location really matters – like, really matters – and The Monroe gets this right. You’re tucked into this quiet residential pocket that actually feels safe to walk around, which isn’t something I say lightly about Jo’burg. There’s this little coffee shop just two blocks down that locals seem to frequent (always a good sign), and you can easily grab an Uber to Sandton City or the Gautrain station without paying those ridiculous downtown rates. The building itself has this sort of understated elegance – clean lines, decent lobby, nothing flashy but everything works properly. I appreciated that the elevators were actually fast and quiet, because honestly, after a long travel day, waiting forever for a creaky lift is just not it.

What really sold me on this place though was how the apartments are set up. Mine had this proper little kitchen with a full-size fridge (not those tiny hotel bar fridges that barely fit a water bottle), decent counter space, and even some basic cookware that didn’t look like it came from a garage sale. The living area opened onto a small balcony – nothing spectacular, but perfect for morning coffee while watching Johannesburg wake up. You know what I really noticed? The hot water pressure was excellent, and it stayed hot for proper long showers. Sounds basic, but you’d be amazed how many places get this wrong. The Wi-Fi was solid too, which matters when you’re trying to stay connected or stream something after exploring the city all day. I did notice some traffic noise in the mornings around 7 AM, but it’s not the kind that keeps you awake – just the gentle hum of a neighborhood coming to life. The staff at reception were genuinely helpful without being overly chatty, and they knew their stuff about getting around the city. Check-in was smooth, parking felt secure (they have a proper gate system), and honestly, for the price point, I left thinking this place punches well above its weight class.

  What could be improved: The load shedding was terrible, no generator and there’s nothing to do at the actual apartment. No activities or fun things to do there, I believe this should be advertised as an Airbnb and not a Hotel. because you are expected to clean your own room
