I’ll be honest – when I first walked into The Ney at The Bolton, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The name alone had me curious, and the location on Sturdee Avenue in Rosebank had me wondering if it would feel too business-district-y. But you know what? This four-star spot completely won me over within the first ten minutes.

The thing about this place is that it sits in this perfect sweet spot in Johannesburg where you’re close enough to everything that matters – the Gautrain station is literally a five-minute walk, which honestly saved my life when I needed to get to the airport early one morning – but far enough from the main drag that you’re not dealing with constant traffic noise. I mean, Rosebank can get pretty hectic during the day, but once you’re inside The Ney, there’s this calm that settles over everything. The lobby has this understated elegance that doesn’t scream “look at me” but still makes you feel like you’re staying somewhere special. They’ve got this great mix of contemporary design with just enough South African touches that you remember where you are without it feeling forced.

What really impressed me was how the staff seemed to actually know the neighborhood – not just the tourist spots, but where to grab decent coffee at 6 AM (there’s a place around the corner that opens early), which streets to avoid during rush hour, that sort of thing. The rooms are well thought out too, and I appreciated that they didn’t skimp on the details that matter when you’re traveling for work or trying to decompress after a long day exploring the city. The beds are genuinely comfortable – not just hotel-marketing comfortable – and the bathrooms have that rainfall shower situation that actually works properly. I stayed during winter, and the heating was spot-on, which isn’t always a given in Jo’burg hotels, honestly. The only minor thing I’d mention is that the wifi can get a bit sluggish in the evenings when everyone’s streaming, but it’s perfectly fine for work stuff during the day. What really sealed the deal for me was the breakfast setup – they do this local-meets-international thing that doesn’t feel like they’re trying too hard, and the coffee is actually good, not just adequate. Plus, if you’re planning to explore the Maboneng Precinct or head over to Sandton, you’re positioned really well here. It’s one of those places where the 8.7 rating makes complete sense once you’ve been there – everything just works the way it should.

  A fantastic apartment in a prime location within a secure building. Parking was readily available, and the apartment was well-equipped for self-catering. The WiFi connection was reliable and worked reasonably well.
  
  What could be improved: The only downside is that the apartment is located next to a main road, resulting in noticeable traffic noise late into the night. It was manageable for my one-night solo stay, but it could be a concern for longer stays or for those traveling with family.
