The Observatory, Luxury Suite in Observatory Home Overview

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard about The Observatory, Luxury Suite in Observatory Home, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. The name’s a bit of a mouthful, and staying in someone’s actual home can go either way, you know? But after spending a few nights there on Frederick Street, I’m genuinely impressed with what they’ve created in this corner of Johannesburg.

Observatory itself is one of those neighborhoods that feels properly lived-in, not touristy at all – which I mean as a compliment. You’re surrounded by jacaranda trees (absolutely stunning when they’re blooming), and there’s this relaxed residential vibe that’s honestly refreshing after dealing with the hustle of the city center. The suite sits in what’s clearly a beautifully maintained home, and the hosts have done something clever here – they’ve managed to give you complete privacy while still making you feel like you’re experiencing authentic Joburg life. The space itself feels genuinely luxurious without being stuffy, if that makes sense. Think proper linens, thoughtful lighting, and little touches that show someone actually cares about your comfort. The bathroom’s particularly well done – I’m talking about one of those rain showers that you don’t want to leave.

What really sold me on this four-star setup was the attention to detail and the location’s sweet spot between accessibility and tranquility. You’re close enough to get into the city proper without much fuss, but far enough out that you’re not dealing with traffic noise all night. The hosts clearly know their stuff – they’ll point you toward the good local spots (there’s a fantastic coffee place just a short walk away that I never would’ve found otherwise), and they’re the kind of helpful that doesn’t feel intrusive. Parking‘s sorted right on the property, which honestly is worth mentioning because anyone who’s tried to park in some parts of Joburg knows what a relief that is. The whole Observatory area has this artsy, slightly bohemian feel during the day – lots of students from the nearby university, some interesting independent shops – but it settles into a peaceful residential quiet by evening. I actually found myself sitting on the little outdoor area they provide just listening to the sounds of the neighborhood winding down, which isn’t something I expected to enjoy as much as I did. If you’re looking for something that feels more authentic than a standard hotel but with proper comfort and privacy, this place hits that balance really well.

Reviews of The Observatory, Luxury Suite in Observatory Home

  • Exceptional – Sergei from Russia – June 3, 2025 (10/10)

Очень добрый хозяин, хорошее место, современный ремонт, удобная ванная комната, если ещё раз приеду, обязательно остановлюсь снова.

  • Very Good – Michael from Kenya – April 30, 2025 (8/10)

The host was very welcoming and responsive. I would recommend it anytime

  • I will most certainly return on my next visit to JHB – Frank from South Africa – January 28, 2025 (10/10)

The owner is very friendly and made sure I was comfortable.

What could be improved: North facing sunny room overlooking a well-kept garden and a super clean swimming pool. Parking is secure on the property.

  • Comfortable and in a good area. Friendly host. – Rothenburg from South Africa – October 2, 2024 (8/10)

The bed was comfortable, the bed linen was nice, the host was friendly, the space was very and clean and big, and it was close to Houghton, where I needed to be every day. The garden was nice, and the patio area was wind- and rain-protected. The blackout curtains were good, and the Wi-Fi worked well. There was also a comfortable seating area to watch TV. Not very far from the airport, which saved time and money when I needed to take an Uber.

What could be improved: Not complaints, but suggestions: add a soap holder and facecloth holder in the shower, and a mixer tap in the shower will be easier to use than 2 separate taps (I was struggling to get it to just the right temperature), a pan and pot with a small one-plat stovetop would be a bonus (sometimes one wants to fry an egg and sausage, which is not that easy in a microwave), darker bathroom mats, (dark blue or camel colour, instead of white) will prevent dirt showing so from walking around barefoot inside and outside (it was hot on the first few days). I would also suggest an extra blanket in the bedroom (I was a bit cold at night). The pool was unavailable while I was there, which was a bit disappointing, as I would've liked a swim on the first few hot days.

  • Good – Zunaith from Turkey – May 19, 2024 (7/10)

The place was exceptionally clean. Plenty hot water with good pressure for showering. Pleasant fragrance from the bouquet of flowers in the room

What could be improved: I asked for self catering but the room didn't have a stove. I had to buy breakfast which cost more than R100/day. The TV lost reception most evenings probably because the bandwidth isn't sufficient to carry the load when everyone is watching at the same time. It was very frustrating

  • I will go back with pleasure. Thank you for everything. – Amine from France – March 10, 2024 (10/10)

Everything, especially the kindness and availability from my host.

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Exceptional – Khambule from South Africa – December 31, 2023 (10/10)

Beautiful place and value for money. Wonderful and warm hosts.

What could be improved: Can't think of any

  • Comfortable home away from home in Joburg! – Serge from Germany – December 14, 2023 (10/10)

The host Nikos was one of the best hosts I had. He was very welcoming and showed great hospitality. I was able to leave my luggage in the house well after check-out time because I had a flight in the evening, which allowed me to easily still explore the city. The pool is nice and the room has almost everything you need!

What could be improved: I actually liked everything but if I would need to come up with something and in order to further improve: My room lacked a kettle to boil water, but I am sure if I had asked for it, I would have received one. I did not need one which is why it was no problem for me 🙂

  • I loved the property and will certainly come back in future. – Munashe from South Africa – November 3, 2023 (8/10)

Quite spacious, clean, full neat bathroom with a convenient kitchenette. Decent WiFi speed. The hosts are quite friendly and always ready to help make the stay even more comfortable, quite hospitable.

What could be improved: No parking bay which could be inconvenient kn cases of harsh weather. Getting in and out of the property could be tricky for an inexperienced driver and with busy traffic behind, one has to be cautious especially coming from the side where one has to cross the bold line to turn into the property. It’s manageable though, for experienced drivers.

  • Exceptional – Jani from South Africa – October 9, 2023 (10/10)

Clean, comfortable, quiet and great facilities including stable internet connectivity.
