This three-star spot sits right in the heart of things, and I’m talking proper central – you can walk to most of the business district without breaking a sweat, but more importantly, you’re close enough to the weekend action in Braamfontein and Newtown that you don’t need to stress about transport at night. The building itself has that solid, no-nonsense feel that a lot of Joburg hotels have, but the inside surprised me. They’ve done something clever with the common areas – lots of natural light during the day, and the lobby doesn’t feel like you’re waiting in a doctor’s office, which honestly happens more than it should in this price range.

What really won me over was how the staff actually knew their stuff about the neighborhood. When I asked about grabbing dinner somewhere that wasn’t a chain restaurant, the guy at reception didn’t just hand me a generic tourist map – he walked me through three different options depending on whether I wanted to stay walking distance or didn’t mind a short Uber ride. That kind of local knowledge is gold when you’re trying to get a real feel for a place. The rooms are clean and functional without any fancy surprises, but everything works (the wifi, the shower pressure, the air conditioning – you know, the stuff that matters when you’re actually living there for a few days). I did notice some street noise in the morning, but honestly, if you’re staying in central Joburg and expecting complete silence, you might want to adjust your expectations. The sound of the city waking up kind of grows on you anyway.

Here’s the thing – The Orange Corner delivers exactly what it promises, and in a city where hotels can be hit or miss, that consistency is worth something. It’s not going to show up on any luxury travel Instagram accounts, but it’s the kind of place where you sleep well, start your day with decent coffee, and don’t spend your whole budget on accommodation so you can actually enjoy what Johannesburg has to offer. The 8.4 rating makes sense to me; it’s not perfect, but it gets the important stuff right without any unpleasant surprises.
