I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to The Sleepover on Moboneng Johannesburg on Fox Street, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The whole Maboneng precinct has this sort of gritty-meets-artsy vibe that can go either way, you know? But this place actually gets it right. It’s a three-star spot that doesn’t try to be something it’s not, which I genuinely appreciate. The building itself has that converted industrial feel – all exposed brick and high ceilings that make the rooms feel way more spacious than they probably are on paper.

What really won me over was how plugged in they are to what’s happening in Johannesburg. I mean, you’re literally in the heart of one of the city’s coolest neighborhoods, and the staff actually knows the area. They pointed me toward this little coffee roastery just around the corner that I never would’ve found otherwise, and honestly, that kind of local insight is worth its weight in gold when you’re exploring a new city. The rooms are clean and comfortable – nothing fancy, but the beds are decent and the Wi-Fi actually works, which is more than I can say for some pricier places I’ve stayed. There’s this nice communal area downstairs where people tend to hang out in the evenings, and I ended up having some great conversations with other travelers there.

Here’s the thing though – this isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea. The area can feel a bit rough around the edges, especially if you’re not used to urban environments, and you’ll definitely hear some street noise at night. But if you’re the type of traveler who wants to actually experience Johannesburg rather than just passing through, this place makes perfect sense. The pricing is fair for what you get, and honestly, the location alone makes it worth considering. You can walk to most of the galleries and restaurants in Maboneng, and getting an Uber to other parts of the city is pretty straightforward from here. I’d say it’s particularly great for younger travelers or anyone who appreciates staying somewhere with a bit of character rather than another generic hotel chain.
