The South Way Overview
I stumbled across The South Way during a business trip to Johannesburg, and honestly, it turned out to be one of those pleasant surprises you don’t see coming. This four-star spot sits on SouthWay Street in what I’d call a pretty solid part of the city – not touristy exactly, but you know, real Joburg life happening around you. The first thing that struck me walking in was how they’ve managed to balance that boutique hotel vibe without trying too hard to be trendy. The lobby has this warm, lived-in feel with local artwork that actually means something, not just random prints they bought in bulk.
What really won me over, though, was the attention to details that matter when you’re actually staying somewhere. The rooms are well thought out – I mean, they’ve got proper bedside lighting for reading, enough power outlets where you need them, and the air conditioning doesn’t sound like a helicopter landing. The bathroom setup is smart too, with one of those rain showerheads that actually has decent water pressure (you’d be surprised how rare that is). From my room on the third floor, I could see a bit of the neighborhood coming to life in the mornings – street vendors setting up, people heading to work, the real rhythm of the city. The staff genuinely seem to know their stuff about Johannesburg, not just the usual tourist spots but where locals go for good food and coffee. They pointed me toward this incredible Ethiopian place just a few blocks away that I never would’ve found otherwise.
The breakfast situation is solid without being overwhelming – fresh fruit that’s actually ripe, proper coffee, and they do this thing with local honey that’s worth getting up for. Parking was straightforward, which is huge in this city, and the whole check-in process felt refreshingly human. I actually ended up extending my stay by two nights because, well, why mess with a good thing? The 9.3 rating they’ve got makes perfect sense once you’ve been there – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in town, but everything works exactly as it should. You know what I appreciated most? The place has character without being quirky for the sake of it, and that’s harder to pull off than you might think.
To explore Johannesburg during the mild winter months from June to August, tourists need early preparation as this dynamic metropolis draws visitors eager to discover its rich mining heritage and renowned art galleries.

The quietness of the place, and the presence of Dudu. Breakfast was great, especially the cereal bowl mixed with fruits and taste. The pleasure of Dudu sitting in with us at breakfast.
What could be improved: Wish the swimming pool was in operation, that would have been wonderful. It was the perfect place for what my needs were. Liked the privacy. Wish I'd have known I was alone. – Filice from Zambia – June 25, 2024 (8/10)
The location was just what I wanted for my trip. Dudu was helpful, easily available, eager to help and please – a great host. Very good at checking in on me and following up on things. Helped me in so many ways. Very accomodating. Able to answer any questions I had. Helpful for advice on ubers, shopping etc. The house was real old style and gorgeous – it's great it is being restored to keep all it's old style features. Absolutely BEAUTIFUL place. Felt like it was a safe and secure place – and a great location to get into the centre of Sandton. Enjoyed the peace and privacy. Loved the room decor. Very comfortable and peaceful. Perfect for me.
What could be improved: What could be improved on is – figuring out what caused our room switches to trip when I put on the room kettle with the heater on. The only other things plugged in were my phone and computer, which is pretty average. Would suggest some chairs to sit out in the garden – maybe plastic ones that can be put out as needed. Bench to be made ready. Struggled to lock many of the doors – perhaps need to take a look at that. The lockable cupboard didn't lock easily. Nor did my room door. Nor did the bathroom door. It is an old house being renovated – so maybe looking at how to have the handles work smoother. I felt perfectly safe and secure – so it wasn't an issue I needed to raise then and there, but it would be good to have it fixed moving forward.Exceptional – Phindile from South Africa – May 6, 2024 (10/10)
