The Throne Goc Guesthouse Overview
Look, I’ll be honest with you – when I first pulled up to The Throne Goc Guesthouse on Columbine Avenue, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like a pretty standard three-star spot in Johannesburg. But you know what? Sometimes the places that don’t try too hard to impress you end up being exactly what you need.
The guesthouse sits in this quiet residential pocket that feels worlds away from the chaos of the city center, though you’re still close enough to get anywhere you need to go without too much fuss. The owners – and I mean this in the best way – run it like they’re actually happy to have you there, not like you’re just another booking number. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward, no corporate nonsense, just real people who know their neighborhood and aren’t shy about sharing recommendations. The room itself was clean and functional, nothing fancy but everything worked properly (which, honestly, is more than I can say for some supposedly fancier places I’ve stayed). The bed was surprisingly comfortable, and I actually slept really well despite being someone who usually struggles in new places.
What really won me over was the little stuff – like how they keep the common areas genuinely welcoming without that sterile hotel vibe, and the way the morning light hits the breakfast area just right. The wifi was solid enough for work calls, the water pressure was decent, and parking wasn’t the usual Johannesburg nightmare I’d braced myself for. I mean, it’s not going to blow your mind with luxury amenities, but it covers all the basics really well and does it with this unpretentious warmth that’s become pretty rare. If you’re looking for somewhere that feels more like staying with locals who know what they’re doing rather than some corporate chain experience, this place gets it right. Plus, that 7.8 rating actually feels accurate – it’s exactly what a good neighborhood guesthouse should be.

What could be improved: Parking is very limited compared to number of rooms on the premises. Bed is not nice, I left to another hotel and didn't stay the night.I wouldn’t ever set foot again at the property. Stay was unpleasant. – Okuhle from South Africa – August 4, 2025 (2/10)

What could be improved: Staff ,not very social and service ,need to work on that
We had to change rooms as the room we were in the Netflix wasn't working ,
The second room we moved to the beds were full of dust and there were spider webs on the lamps ,even the kettle was full.of slime and stank like sewage as if it was sitting there for a long time we had to get the kettle from our previous room,2 people but they gave 1 towel, no hand soap etc that is usually supplied by accommodation,
1 mug for 2 people ,
I was very dissapointed 😔Wonderful – Keiponye from Botswana – May 12, 2025 (8/10)
Very Friendly staff. Close to amenities. Very quiet neighborhood.
What could be improved: It wasn’t very clean, I believe it was just a mishap because I had to move to another room. I believe it can be cleaner if effort is made. It has a very great potential.Exceptional – Rukundo from Uganda – May 7, 2025 (10/10)
