The Tyrwhitt Rosebank Apartments Overview

I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to The Tyrwhitt Rosebank Apartments on Bath Avenue, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like just another apartment block. But you know what? Sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t try too hard to impress you from the street. This four-star property is actually one of those hidden gems that locals in Johannesburg seem to know about but tourists often miss.

What really struck me about this place is how it gets the apartment-style accommodation thing right – I mean, you’re not crammed into a tiny hotel room, but you’re also not left feeling like you’re staying in some sterile corporate housing. The units are properly spacious (thank goodness, because Jo’burg can feel overwhelming and you need somewhere to actually breathe), and honestly, the kitchenettes are way more functional than most places bother with. I actually cooked breakfast a couple of times, which is saying something because I’m usually too lazy to do anything more complicated than coffee when I’m traveling. The whole setup just feels… well, liveable, if that makes sense.

Location-wise, you’re right in the heart of Rosebank, which – let me tell you – is probably one of the better areas to base yourself if you’re trying to figure out Johannesburg. You can walk to the Gautrain station in about five minutes (seriously, I timed it), which means you’re connected to the airport and Sandton without dealing with traffic. The Rosebank Mall is literally across the street, and while that might sound touristy, it’s actually where a lot of locals shop and eat, so you get this nice mix of convenience and authenticity. Plus, there’s this Sunday market that happens nearby – if you’re there on the weekend, definitely check it out for proper boerewors and local crafts.

The staff here seem to actually live in the real world, which I appreciated. When I needed directions to Constitution Hill, the guy at reception didn’t just hand me a generic tourist map – he actually explained which streets to avoid and suggested I grab lunch at this little Portuguese place on the way back. That kind of local knowledge makes such a difference when you’re trying to navigate a city that can feel pretty intimidating at first. The building itself is quiet enough (important in a busy area like this), and parking was straightforward, though I’d recommend confirming that when you book because Johannesburg without a car can be tricky depending on what you want to do.

Look, this isn’t the kind of place that’s going to wow you with fancy lobbies or over-the-top amenities, but that’s sort of the point. It’s practical, comfortable, and puts you right where you need to be to actually experience Johannesburg rather than just surviving it. If you’re the type of traveler who values having space to spread out and a genuine sense of the neighborhood over hotel theatrics, you’ll probably love it here as much as I did.

Places near me in Johannesburg offer convenient access to major landmarks, where visitors can easily reach Apartheid Museum, Carlton Centre, and world-famous shopping districts in the bustling Sandton area.

Reviews of The Tyrwhitt Rosebank Apartments

  • I had a great stay – Kopano from South Africa – May 26, 2025 (7/10)

The property met the expectation everything we needed was there. Comfortable and clean.

What could be improved: The process to get the keys took 45 minutes. The property, agents and the Concierge seemed to have miscommunication on instruction to get the keys and it kept us waiting for 45 minutes. The parking lot was not communicated just like the keys the process of accessing the place after the keys was also not communicated. Got whatsapp communication from the concierge but often taking longer to respond. I think all these things can be improved.

  • Everything else was good – Ilonda from South Africa – April 1, 2025 (8/10)

All was good except the couch and the dining table that were not in a good condition.

  • Lovely place, but hosts can work on communication – Awesomevish from South Africa – March 18, 2025 (7/10)

The apartment is beautiful and comfortable. It is clean and well maintained. I was pleasantly surprised after my stay the night before at another establishment which, despite being a similar price, was dirty and very uncomfortable.

What could be improved: I rebooked after the original four nights for another four nights. Even though the original booking was not for a serviced apartment, I asked if I could get the apartment cleaned as I was considering extending my stay. I received a message to say that this was a decision they could make after I booked. I felt this was a little shady. Why wait for me to book first and then decide if you can offer a complimentary clean?

The hosts eventually did offer a complimentary clean but, plot twist, it never happened! I sent a message to express my disappointment but received no reply. I was very upset with this. I like dealing with people who keep to their word.

Apart from this, I was happy with everything else. The fridge had a fishy smell, but it was because it was closed for so long. It dissipated shortly after I moved in.

Charging points was not easily accessible, only found a decent point at the TV unit.
Water drainage an issue at the entrance of the front door, because of the rain.
