The name had me thinking it might be some over-the-top themed place, but actually, it’s this beautifully restored heritage building that sits quietly in one of Johannesburg’s more interesting neighborhoods. You know what struck me first? The way they’ve managed to keep that old-world elegance without making it feel like a museum you’re afraid to touch.

The four-star rating feels just right here – it’s polished and professional without being stuffy. I mean, the lobby has this gorgeous original staircase that probably has stories to tell, and the staff actually seems to know the area well enough to give you real recommendations, not just the tourist trap stuff. The rooms are what I’d call thoughtfully done – they’ve got character but also proper blackout curtains (trust me, you’ll appreciate this if you’re dealing with jet lag) and decent Wi-Fi that actually works when you need it. The bathrooms are surprisingly spacious too, which is something you don’t always get in heritage buildings.

What really sold me on this place, though, is how it sits in the neighborhood. East Street isn’t the flashiest address in Joburg, but that’s actually part of its charm – you’re close enough to the action without being in the thick of all the chaos. There’s decent parking (which anyone who’s driven in Johannesburg will tell you is not a given), and honestly, the area feels safe enough to walk around during the day if you want to explore a bit. The hotel seems to attract a mix of business travelers and people who actually want to experience the city rather than just pass through it. I noticed the restaurant gets busy with locals too, which is always a good sign – when residents choose to eat somewhere, you know they’re doing something right. It’s not the kind of place that’s going to wow you with flashy amenities or Instagram-perfect infinity pools, but if you want a solid base with some genuine South African hospitality and a bit of history in the walls, this hits the mark.

  The staff were excellent. Friendly and nothing was too much. Breakfast cooked fresh every time with good quality ingredients. Lovely coffee and a good selection of teas. We were offered an upgrade to a very spacious room. The internet was good and the television was also good offering netflix. We would definitely go again.
