Tlelakufuma Guest House Overview
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Tlelakufuma Guest House on Kersieboom Street, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. The name had me curious (and yeah, I had to ask how to pronounce it), but once you’re there, you get it. This three-star spot sits in what’s actually a pretty decent part of Johannesburg, and I mean that in the best way possible – you’re not in the tourist bubble, but you’re not somewhere sketchy either.
The thing about this place is that it genuinely feels like staying at someone’s home, which sounds cliché until you experience it. The owners – and I’m pretty sure I met at least two family members during my stay – actually care about making sure you’re sorted. When I arrived around 3 PM on a Tuesday, there was this wonderful smell of something cooking wafting from what I assumed was the kitchen, and honestly? It made the whole place feel warm in a way that fancy hotels just can’t manufacture. The rooms themselves are clean and comfortable – nothing fancy, but everything works. The bed was surprisingly good (I’m picky about mattresses), and the shower had proper hot water, which… well, if you’ve stayed in budget places around Joburg before, you know that’s not always a given.
What I really appreciated was the neighborhood vibe. Kersieboom Street is quiet enough that you can actually sleep without earplugs, but you’re still close enough to catch a taxi or Uber to wherever you need to go without breaking the bank. There’s a local shop about two blocks down where you can grab basics, and the woman who runs it gave me better directions to the Apartheid Museum than my GPS did. The guest house has decent parking too – nothing fancy, just a safe spot off the street, which matters more than you might think. I noticed other guests seemed to be a mix of business travelers and people like me who wanted something real instead of a cookie-cutter hotel experience. The common areas get a bit busy in the evenings, but it’s the good kind of busy where you might end up chatting with someone interesting over coffee. I mean, the 8.4 rating makes sense once you’re there – it’s not trying to be something it isn’t, and that authenticity is exactly what makes it work.

The place was perfect
What could be improved: We had a problem with the lady's attitude but we spoke because she didn't welcome us well instead the guy was very welcoming and helped us very patient with us and he treated us very well the lady must just learn to welcome people and inform them with her rules not ambush them and favor other race than other..…Good – Mokhwae from South Africa – May 19, 2025 (8/10)

Welcoming host, spotlessly clean. Excellent Parking. Location nearby Gold Reef and S.Gate – Bill from Botswana – March 17, 2025 (9/10)
Tlelakufuma guest was a very pleasant surprise. We booked the property mainly because it was very close to the NASREC center, where we were attending a week-long exhibition. It was a ten minute drive, or less. Also a main consideration was the price. So, we weren't expecting a top notch place. However, we were very pleasantly surprised. We arrived right on time to find the owner/manager actually standing by the gate seemingly waiting for us to arrive. He opened the electric gate and the garage door where we had our own parking space for the duration of our stay. We were given a remote for the electric gate, so we were free to enter or exit at any time without requiring assistance. The level of cleanliness was excellent. This applies to the front lounge area, the kitchen area, and to our room. In our room, the bed appeared to be new and was very comfortable. The TV worked well with a reasonable selection of channels to watch including all the SABC and eTV channels as well as 2 movie channels and France 24 as a 24 hour news channel. The air-con seemed to work fine, although due to the cool weather we had no need for it. The shower was enormous with one of those giant shower heads with good pressure and plenty of hot water. My only negative comment would be that there was no handle, or anything to grip onto in the shower, or a rubber shower mat which for me at 68 years are useful things to have. The room was quite small so there was no space for a desk. There was a bedside table on one side, which was enough, but no bedside light or lamp. The host was very friendly and helpful, and made us feel at home. Overall, I can say that we will certainly be back again next time we are in that Southern part of Johannesburg.
What could be improved: There was no shower mat, or anything to hold on to while in the shower. No bedside lamp.Perfect. – Desiree from Eswatini – March 3, 2025 (9/10)
