The location in Houghton is honestly perfect if you want to feel like you’re staying somewhere that locals actually live. Tree Tops has this quiet residential vibe that’s refreshing after dealing with the hustle of central Johannesburg – you can actually hear birds in the morning instead of just traffic. The apartment sits on the second floor, which I initially worried about with luggage, but the building’s well-maintained and the stairs aren’t too brutal. What really got me was how the space feels genuinely lived-in rather than sterile. The two bedrooms are spacious enough that you’re not bumping into each other constantly, and honestly, having two full bathrooms is a game-changer when you’re traveling with friends or family – no more awkward morning routines.

The neighborhood surprised me too. I mean, Houghton has always been one of those areas where you feel safe walking around, but Tree Tops specifically has this almost suburban calm that you don’t expect so close to the city center. There’s decent street parking, which anyone who’s dealt with Joburg parking will appreciate, and you’re close enough to the main routes that getting to Sandton or Rosebank doesn’t become this whole production. The apartment itself has that modern-but-not-trying-too-hard aesthetic – think clean lines and neutral colors, but with enough character that it doesn’t feel like a showroom. The kitchen actually has everything you need if you want to cook (and the local Woolworths isn’t far if you need supplies), though with the area’s restaurant scene, you might not bother much. What I really appreciated was the attention to practical details – good water pressure, reliable wifi, and blackout curtains that actually work. Sometimes it’s those little things that make or break a stay, you know? The 8.1 rating makes complete sense once you’re there – it’s not flashy perfection, but it’s solid, comfortable, and feels authentic in a way that a lot of places don’t anymore.

  The apartment was pleasant apart from two light bulbs not working and unemptied trash can.
  
  What could be improved: I had initially booked the apartment for 3 nights and had then notified the host, Kay, a whole day before initial check out (Tuesday) that I would like to extend my stay for another 2 nights. She had advised that she will share the confirmation shortly and I had not heard back from her. The next day I had given her a call to confirm the payment and booking as usually the host amends the booking and the amount due gets debited off the card used for the initial booking, for which I did not receive a notification. We had then agreed in the later part of the afternoon that I will ensure either payment (EFT or cash) option is cleared the following morning (Thursday) as my bank had already closed for this international EFT on this day due to the delay in her sharing her bank details. I then get a call from another lady called Nel at night acknowledging my agreement with Kay but disregarding it completely and demanding the cash immediately (at 9pm) else she would vacate myself and my elderly mother. She was extremely rude and unprofessional and had put myself in uncomfortable position to visit an ATM late at night and did not care for my confirmation with Kay to ensure that I may hand the payment to her. This experience was extremely traumatic and I will not recommend this facility to anyone for fear of them having to experience the same.

  What could be improved: Kitchen utensils were very poor. More cutlery, dry rack, bowls ect is needed. Mirror in bedrooms would be good, also bed lamps. Was nice to stay there but need a couple more things te sell as luxury apartment
