I mean, Oranje Avenue isn’t exactly the kind of road tourists usually find themselves on, but that’s actually part of its charm. The whole area feels more like a proper neighborhood than a hotel district – there are jacaranda trees lining the streets, and you’ll hear roosters in the morning (seriously, roosters in Johannesburg).

The lodge itself has this sort of homey, unpretentious vibe that I wasn’t expecting from a three-star place. The owners clearly live on-site, which means you get that personal touch that’s missing from bigger hotels. My room was clean and comfortable – nothing fancy, but the beds are actually decent quality and there’s proper hot water pressure (trust me, this matters more than you think). The breakfast room overlooks a small garden where they’ve got some indigenous plants growing, and the staff knows your name by day two. What I really appreciated was the parking situation – you’ve got a secure spot right on the property, which is huge when you’re dealing with Johannesburg traffic and want to explore places like Sandton City Centre or even head up to the Cradle of Humankind for a day trip.

Location-wise, you’re about fifteen minutes from OR Tambo if traffic’s behaving, which makes it surprisingly practical for early flights. The neighborhood’s got that established suburban feel – there’s a decent shopping center with a Pick n Pay about five minutes away, and honestly, the whole Gallo Manor area feels safer and quieter than a lot of other parts of the city. I wouldn’t call it walking distance to major attractions, but if you’ve got a rental car (which you probably should in Joburg anyway), you’re well-positioned for getting around. The rates are pretty reasonable too – you’re paying for location and that personal service rather than fancy amenities, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
